This was on the TV news today. Not plated....solid gold. Three of them already sold. They are functional but possibly too soft to ride.

You'd think a gold bike would be spec'd better than that.

Yeah, but all the other paperboys are NJS. This thing's probably worth about $5-600 MSRP tops if it weren't gold.

But hey... gotta pay to play.

The designer? builder? Was on the TV. It was even worse, but kinda true. He said, "People will buy them because they can." He did spin the crank to show it worked.

So does one use a lock made from real kryptonite? Or a swat team, including a sniper, to lock it up? Mavbe one needs to paint it black to take it out.:)

A solid gold chainring and cog? Wouldn't the teeth on those be destroyed as soon as you tried pedaling hard? To say nothing of the threads on the hub, or... well, a lot of stuff on that bike.

I have a feeling that the only thing "solid" gold is the frame. However it is not intended to be ridden. After seeing the pedals and the wheel spin I think they are just typical parts plated gold. I can't imagine solid gold ball bearings ! As you say, a lot of stuff would not even work.

Edit: I still don't believe it, but this what one article says, "Solid"

The Scandinavian design firm Aurumania has created 10 bikes made out of solid 24-karat gold.

Each piece of every bike was created by hand and the whole thing decorated with 600 Swarovsky crystals.

The bikes all come with a leather seats and horns and they each cost around 80,000 dollars. Why that expensive ? Unlike other “gold” bikes these are solid gold, not plated.

Already we know it's wrong,as soul05 pointed out. Do you think I can get my $100,00 back? :)

If you can afford $100,000 for a bike, you could probably afford an armed guard to protect it if for some crazy reason you decided to ride it and leave it outside somewhere.

If you can afford $100,000 for a bike, you should be driving a M3 and with the rest of the $ have your head examined!

i hate the idea. if i am going to pay a ton of money for a bike, i want it to be for proformance, not because its solid gold. gold is too soft to be useful for anything except jewlery and electronics. keep it off bikes.

whats proformance?

thats awesome. of course the person who buys that bike isn't going to ride it, its made out of gold, hence, it serves the same function as jewelry.

It's plated.

1) 24 karat gold is too soft and malleable.

2) A solid gold formula hub? Right.

That being said, Woody Itson might be interested. http://www.vitalbmx.com/photos/features/Freestylin-Launch-Party,16054/Woody-Itson-and-the-Gold-Trick-Star,10231/Losey,112

Also, $100,000 is a joke. It's a $600 bike to start with. The amount of gold required to plate that bike is minuscule.

I'll put it this way, it took an estimated 43 ounces (2.7 lbs) of gold to plate the Georgia State Capitol:

http://law.gsu.edu/photobar/gold_dome.jpg

The gold "was milled into gold leaf 1/5,000th of an inch thick, or about the thickness of the tinfoil when peeled from a chewing gum wrapper."

oh, since its plated then thats absolutely ridiculous. I used to get gold plated pokemon cards from burgerking when i was in middle school for a dollar...

yeah those bikes are plated and are not solid gold, also you seem to be a half year behind the times on reporting on these bikes.

if i had a hundred grand laying around i would buy it. that being said if i just had a hundred grand laying around i would ride it too because surely i would have another 100 grand to buy a new one when it broke. or buy two, one to hang up and one to ride.

If you were smart enough to accumulate $100,000 then it stands to reason that you'd be smart enough to avoid buying this scam.

If you were dumb and happened to inherit $100,000 then someone would have scammed it out of you by now or you'd blow it on hookers and cocaine.

This bike is for those UAE goofballs that get into "I'm richer than you" pissing contests with each other.
