Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Formula Hubs - Lockrings don't thread on

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have a formula rear hub with fixed/fixed. I've tried Ben's lockrings and Dura-Ace lockrings and neither thread onto the hub. What gives?

Are you screwing it on counter-clockwise?

the threading on the cog is clockwise to tighten (turns right)
threading on lockring is anticlockwise to tighten (turns left)
ya?

Close your eyes, screw it the other way, and it will magically thread on.:thumb:

You placed a bet about how many replies you'd get.

Or the threads are screwed.
Do people not take the time to look up the basics of fixed gear bikes before deciding they want one?
why buy a formula hub, you know there crapola hubs right?

There is nothing wrong with Formula hubs.
i just bought a front formula to build a wheel, i don't like the rear one's with them 200mm axles.

so you can have pegs and carry a circus bear on the back

lol alright seems like formula hubs sound very, well, sound ;D hope thats true, just replaced my stock with a formula~ hope it lasts
^^^ thats if the rear axle don't catch on to somethin (200mm long).

I still say new people should have to take a simple aptitude test before they can be allowed to post!

the long axles are annoying, but grease should do the trick.

I have formulas and never had a problem like this.

This may sound stupid, but when I rode BMX I would just saw off the extra length of the axle. The axle length on Formula hubs never bothered me but couldn't you either just swap out for a shorter axle or carefully cut them down to a more like-able size?

yep..cut down the axle...If you do, keep the axle nut on.. After you cut down the axle, you can unthread the nut and it helps "chase" the threads on the axle..

I didn't call you new, I called the OP new however you maybe have been here longer than me your posts are still worthless.

if something magically passes through your cranks and catches your axle, you have more important things to worry about.

Yes, I got one side to screw on fine, the hub threading steps down in diameter from where the cog threads on to where the lockring threads on. The flip side (or flop side) doesn't want to thread on. It does not appear to step down in diameter like the other side. Seems like I need a different lockring.

Hope im not being captain obvious here but, I think that the side that doesnt have the "stepped down" threads is intended to have a freewheel on it, not a cog / lockring. Dont know if you can put a lockring on that side.

You realize axles can be shortened right. And that formulas come in two different axle lengths.

You can put a lockring, just not one that regularly goes on a track hub. And it wouldn't be reverse threaded obviously.

Stepped side is for fixed application. The side that has one continuous tread is for a freewheel. I suggest you have your bike checked by a professional before you take it out and kill yourself.

That side is for a freewheel cog!

Problem Solved. Congrats OP.
Do you plan on riding a freewheel? Otherwise you could sell your wheels or trade for something with fixed/fixed.
