"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Wet race tomorrow

When I signed up for the race Friday at 4:30pm They where saying it would rain all day today, which it did, and most likely not rain tomorrow, only 10% chance. Well when I got up today I looked and they are saying a 70% chance of rain tomorrow and a lower temp than originally. Race starts at 9:05am and is 68miles.


8am 42° rain 70%
9am 43° rain 70%
10am 44° rain 70%
11am 45° rain 70%
12pm 45° rain 70%
1pm 45° rain 70%

That just sucks. $48 to race in the rain.

Im racing in the rain tomorrow, probably going to be in the mid-high 30's and raining.. Me and my teammate are going from the gun, hopefully the conditions have everyone wanting to sit in and let us go...

I am just thinking about how hard it will be to get ready before the race and to put all my wet and grimy stuff away when I am finished. If only I had an RV.

I need to buy one of those big old down by the river vans to drive to races.

I don't race in the rain (anymore). So I wouldn't do it.

Crits are scary in the rain. Road racing isn't bad.

Have you ever ridden with a bunch of Cat3's down a 40mph twisty descent in the pouring rain. I haven't but I will get to find out what its like tomorrow. I'm glad I have some KoolStop Salmon's. But my Vittoria Open Corsa's don't have me excited really. I usually run 100/110 in them so I was thinking 95/105.

yes. also have raced in wintry mix with the P123 - lots of high speed twisty sections. be confident in your ability and by all means, on the downhills, get near the front - set it up on the uphill portions.

I usually race on 95/105, it's just more comfortable, but I'm fairly small and higher pressures seem to bounce me around too much.

have a cap on, the bill of it will be an asset to help you see. take care of your hands, if they get cold and numb, yer pretty much toast. in conditions like that, I figure I'm going to get wet, but I'll try my best to be warm.

oh yeah, wet and cold pack = unmotivated chasers, prime for good move that'll get you 10 pts on that upgrade ;)

yep your forecast is the same as 80% of the country in spring. and the good news is everyone else hates it just as much.

(now that I've figured out what clothes work for me. Descente ColdOut bib tights if it's cold, Hincapie knee warmers if it's not; solid sleeveless baselayer + jersey + arm warmers; Descente Wombat gloves; rain jacket)

A 10% grade? Damn straight I'm doing that; in any conditions!
I raced a crit in central S. Carolina today, same rain and cold plus lots of painted lines. I'm still alive.

My first thought was that you meant for him to cut arm and head holes and race in that... :)

:thumb: to rain racing. My first two wins last year were in the rain. For a while, I thought that was my curse.

Have to ask yourself why you race, and wheter doing a particular race in those conditions is worth it.

If you race for fun, and to have motivation to stay fit, and it's not fun, don't race.

If you have an obligation to teammates, are getting paid, are trying to win a season long series, or have some other reason to race, then balance whatever that reaosn is against the increased risk, and unpleasantness, and decide what makes sense.

For me, if its not going to be fun, and its more dangerous, then it doesn't help me meet my goals.

I went and everything was fine, no problems at all except for all the cleaning I have got to do now. I was 8th out of 40, since my climbing has been way off for a while now. On that descent there was one near 180° turn that had a road sign saying 10mph. It was stupid tight and stupid wet and I took it about 14mph and I was going off and leaving most people. We had to climb the mountain twice, the second time finishing at the top.

I went and everything was fine, no problems at all except for all the cleaning I have got to do now. I was 8th out of 40, since my climbing has been way off for a while now.
