One vote for Sportworks.
Two votes for sportworks. I love my mod series.

Three for Sportworks. I have the Mod.
I have both and it depends on the use. For trips, the Yakima hitchfork is the clear choice for security and flexibility. Plus if you have alot of Yakima stuff, it's all compatible- that's a huge $ savings and flexibility.
You can cram 4 bikes on the hitchfork in a pinch-Sportworks is 3.
If it's for mountain bikes (especially if you have discs) you gotta go with Sportworks. They are easy to load, stable and EASY to load. It's a great rack, plain and simple.
It isn't as flexible as the Yakima- which you can use tons of different ways- but just for a couple bikes, Sportworks is solid.
You could also go Yakima and put the King Cobra back there and be just like the Sportworks too, although in that case I would just get the SW.
Either way is good. If it's just for bikes (esp. mountain bikes) and you don't have any Yakima stuff, get the Sportworks.
I'd go with the Sportworks. For one it costs a lot less then a Yakima, & IMO it is much more versatile then the Yakima. Not sure about the Yakima, but when my Sportworks is not in use it is folded up. Plus I can remove a tray if it is not being used, again not sure if this can be done with the Yakima. When we bought our Sportworks we had to have an extension piece on it because one of the recumbents is under seat steering. Does Yakima offer this if it is needed?
Yakima folds up and you can add or delete as many bike mounts up to 4. Sportworks limit is 3.
You can use several different Yakima bike mounts (Like the Steelhead, Copperhead, Boa, etc) or put a basket (like the Loadwarrior) back there or make your own use and mount on the Hitchfork with Yakima's mightymounts.
You can use it as a rack for ski or snowboard mounts as well.
I have no idea about recumbents.
Again, both are good racks and it depends on the individual. If you already have Yakima stuff, it makes economic sense to stay with Yak. Otherwise, the Sportworks is great.
Have you looked at other brands? I like my Hollywood Teamrider. I have the 2-bike version but it's expandable. However it's no longer made.

I've seen a similar hitchrack made by Delta that supports the bike like my Teamrider except that the Delta BikeHaul (http://www.deltacycle.com/transporter/bikehaul.php) doesn't fold up. It does however have some nice features like the ability to mount a bumper and it's also expandable to four bikes.

I have to put in a vote for the saris cycle-on hitch rack. It works just like the sportworks rack, but seems to hold the bikes steadier. It's very easy to load. It comes in a two bike config, expandable to four. The only thing I don't like is that it is heavy enough that my better half has a hard time mounting it to our truck. Other than that I'm loving ours since we got it.

The Sportworks Transport can handle 2, 3, or 4 bikes.
The Mod can do 1, 2, or 3.
