If it was the one I saw earlier today, and bought last year, it was probably the Timbuk2 Messenger Original Classic.

It's a very good bag for the money, especially if you get it when it's on sale.

It was the Crumpler Barney Rustle. $29 bucks. They're $125 on Crumpler's site. There was still a few left when time ran out, so it should be back up soon. Its the black and gray one too, so its not one of those ugly ***** colors.

I just curious, but what are the reasons to converting to a messenger bag from a normal backpack? Is it just for looks?

I think there was a thread on this not too long ago. A mess bag is good if you are constantly stopping to take things out of or put thing into your bag without taking it off - or at least that was the conclusion of the last thread.

I also like that when I'm forced to take transit, I can just throw the bag around on my lap instead of completely taking it off.
The Crumpler bag is really annoying because the stabilization strap has the long part hanging off the shoulder strap, and the short part attached to the bag. Basically, you have to reach under your armpit and fumble around for the clip where you can't see it. Makes it a total pain.
The guy on fixedgeargallery fixed it by swapping the clip's location, but that takes a bit of sewing. If you have the time and the means, go for it.

I prefer backpacks. I find them more comfortable.

i concur.
mess bags are easier to sew if you are making your own.
and you get that big flap for art work.
