and when I brought it home I popped in a C battery and almost immediately the buzzer went off and nearly gave me a heart attack. I quickly removed it and then tried again to find that even if I close the door the buzzer still goes off.
I then cut and soldered wires to the + contact and the wire leading into the buzzer itself into a momentary contact switch to find that nothing happens when I press it or release it.
Does anyone know how I can make this work again?

I've never seen one of those, but I would suspect that the casing is the negative path and the circuit is completed when you press the button ?
It sounds like the button forces a flat spring (cantilever spring) to make contact with the buzzer housing.
I'd guess your's didn't quite clear the housing when you closed it and needed tweaking.
Close the back and try pressing both buttons at once. :)
I reattached everything like it was and even then the buzzer doesn't work. I can't seem to open the buzzer mechanism itself as it is sealed with stamped "nails"
When I do get this to work, I plan on drilling a hole to attach a cable which will go out into a sort of dashboard for my bike and have controls for the headlamps, horns, and anything else electronic on the bike.

Do you know how to do a continuity test ?

Set the multimeter so it is on 'continuity' - it will buzz when you touch the probes together.
Take the battery out of the 'vintage buzzer'.
Test for continuity between both 1/2 of the inside of the case.
Check for continuity between the inside of the 1/2 with the button to the cantilever spring (strip of metal riveted at one end).
Check for continuity between the coil spring and the inside of the case.
Finally check for continuity between the coil spring and the cantilever spring.
It's hard to see how it's put together from the pictures, is the buzzer part plastic mounted to isolate it from the case ?
