I'm new to track cycling and I'm trying to figure out what kind of wheels to race this summer. I have a pair of velocity deep v's but I'm wondering if I should go with a lighter rim rather than the ones I've got. I've read on these forums that you don't get much pay off for aero rims until you get into really deep cross sections (45mm and up). I could get some Open Pros pretty easily and I'm leaning towards those for the weight. Does an aerodynamic rim really help me out that much at my level? I'm a student so I can't even begin to afford a lot of the high quality wheels I see people talk about here (unless anyone has some ideas about where I can score something cheap), I'm just looking for some general advice about what's most important in a wheel for a beginning racer. Thanks!

It needs to be round, true, and capable of holding you and your bicycle off the ground. Seriously: those are the only important attributes for the beginner. Worry about training, tactics, and bike handling. Equipment will come into play after you become competitive as a cat. 2.

What he said.

Learning to race well will make you way more competitive than aero wheels will, and it will still be useful after you upgrade. The aero stuff is nice when you get to where 30 watts is the difference between your head *actually* exploding in a paceline and just feeling like it's going to.

Check the single speed/track wheels at Bicycle Wheel Warehouse. (http://www.bicyclewheelwarehouse.com/index.php?act=viewCat&catId=10) You get lots of options here. I've got four sets of their wheels here (road x2, cx and mtb) and their prices are tough to beat. I can't even build them myself for what they charge.
