Hello...i've read the threads on slick tires for mtb.
A question though, I currently have the stock "Ground Control" tires on my Spec Hardrock (29 X1.95 i believe)...
What size slick tire will my rims be able to handle?

I've run as narrow as a 1.5 without problems on my rims. (Mavic)
I know they make some stupid skinny tires down to 1.0". I almost bought a pair for my bike, so can't speak about experience with them.

I ran 1.5" Specialized Nimbus EX's on my 2003 Hardrock for around 2000 miles. Not a single flat and they are still in great condition. They are a bit heavy though. You should be able to pull off 1.25" tires if you really want, but I wouldnt try any smaller than that.
You can easily use 26" x 1.25 slicks on your rims. Geax Streetrunners in that size have been working great on my inexpensive mtb. I've even ridden easy singletrack with them, no problems or flats.
I've been running 26x1.5 Nimbus EX's on my older Hardrock for about 3 years now and haven't had to mess with them other than the occasional top off of air
