Fifty Plus (50+) - Ever had your bike rack stolen?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I occasionally mount my bike on the back of my car with a rack that I leave in the trunk otherwise. It attaches to the back of the car. When I get to my riding destination, I often am too lazy to take the rack off the car and store it in the trunk while I'm riding. But I wonder how about how often things like that get stolen. Seems it would be hard to steal without cutting a couple of straps, but then again, I'm not a thief so what do I know?
Anyway -- any of you ever have one stolen, or hear of one stolen from someone else?
Here's a shot of my rack on my car:

Fortunately, have never had that happen, at least not yet. And the one I use, you wouldn't need to even cut the straps, just loosen them and remove the rack. I tend to leave it on a car without the bike for days at a time too.

The economy does not suck in DG world. Nice ride bro. But why did you forego the spinning hubcaps option?
I realize times are bad, DG, but for god sake man, can't you afford a decent car?

No but seriously, have you ever had your rack stolen, or know anyone who has?
It must be nice to spend your Obama bonus on a new car.:D:thumb:

Seriously? I have never had my rack stolen but I still don't leave it on the car anyway. I lock it in the trunk or back seat. I think all the sun here in California would be hard on the straps, too.
Since I stopped driving it doesn't get much use.
I see them left on other people's cars and wonder the same thing.
Sorry, I'm not much help...:)

Rats, I wanted to pick on you about your car too :(
BTW, how is your ancient chevy?
With the racks. I deliberately chose a rack that comes off in a poofteenth of a second. It has a tow bar mount that stays on the car. The rack drops into a couple of tubes but is held in place by gravity and a couple of those pins they used to use to hold down the bonnet on hotted up cars (hood? the big flat thing that covers the engine cavity). To remove/replace the rack, it's simply a matter of pulling the pin and lifting out the rack which then drops into the boot (trunk) of the car. Simple and quick - the rack rattles a bit when driving but I got used to that quickly and the sheer convenience of the thing is wonderful for someone as lazy as me.
As far as leaving it on goes, I think the danger would be less of someone deciding they liked your nice rack and more of some half wit deciding to vandalise the thing because it makes them feel less insignificant. A simple lock somewhere would prevent the former but only a security guard will prevent the latter.

Actually, I use a hitch rack with a locking hitch pin. Then there is the locking bicycle clamp. In addition to that, I install multiple locking cables through the rack, wheels and frames of the bikes that are onboard. I have left this assembly in restaurant parking lots while on vacation without loss..............knock on wood.
I could be wrong, but I simply don't see trunk racks being secured in a similar manner.

I have a Saris Bones on my car all the time, it has been there for 2+ years now. I don't want my riding pushed away because I am too lazing to put the rack back. The only inconvenience is that most car washes don't like racks so I have to use stations equipped with touchless washes (power jets) or wash the car myself.
BTW: I wouldn't allow you to put my bike on your rack. The way this thing has been set two bikes would spend the ride banging against each other. :(
I wouldn't mind sharing a ride with hermes though, especially if I drive.

I can't wait to see what kind of offspring those two produce but I'll bet that it will be fast!

Sorry DG, I've had one on the back of my Honda CRV for the past four years without a problem.
To answer your question seriously, no, I have not had a rack stolen.
I've left the rack mounted on the car during day rides with no problems. On occasion when my car was parked for a week I've always locked the rack inside the car.

I've never had one stolen, probably because I've never left one unattended!
Put in the trunk, and you won't have to wonder if it will be there when you return from your ride.
Seriously, I had a roof rack stolen from the car while at the UCSD library--that was about 1983 or 1984. In spite of that, I've been leaving my cheap trunk-mount carrier on at the trailheads lately.

I've left it on, but have at times been uneasy about it. Locally, I am more inclined to leave it on. When I am on a trip, though, I always put it in the trunk or back seat. It would really s*ck to have the rack goes missing 600 miles from home.

Mine is a hitch rack, made by me, and I sometimes leave it on the car. So far it has always been there.

You guys should get a proper car (like my Toyota Starlet w hitch) and a lockable Thule hitch mounted rack for three bikes. :D

Or, like my VW Passat with Yakama roof rack that locks on. It'll hold FOUR bikes. :D
Never had a rack stolen, but did have a bike stolen off the back of a trunk mounted rack and the bike was cable locked to the rack.... that is, until it the cable was cut. Now I keep the bike(s) up top where they're easier to see when running into a convenience store for a minute.

Egads, Man!
You just need to check in with the Rolls Taste Patrol and retrieve your _accessory_ there. Haven't read the manual yet, eh? All obnoxious, unsightly, distasteful accessories will be forthwith removed from any Rolls discovered to have said items attached.
By the way, next time be sure to secure your straps. I am sure that caught the eye of the RTP and caused them to strip your car of the disfigurement.
Sincerely,
Robert
PS. And no I have never had a bike rack stolen. bikes yes, racks no.

I've never had a rack stolen, or knew someone who had. I almost aways leave it on, and since I got my new car and hitch rack I think it will be there until fall.
I have kept a rack on a car for months at a time and no one has ever messed with it.

Let me guess, it's a couple of bits of rusty angle iron welded to the back end of an ancient Chevvy
