I want to tighten it up so there's less give, as I put so much weight on it right now they just sink down.

I want to make sure I get them both even so I don't put more strain on one side than the other.

Does that matter or am I being overly concerned?

I don't know if you are overly concerned but a trick I learned is to put zip ties on the bottom of the shaft where the post goes into the shock. Ride and then see where the zips end up. As the fork drops it will push up the zip tie. Adjust until even.

Are you sure the same adjustment exists on both legs? Many modern forks, like my RockShox Revelation 426, have an air spring in one leg and damping in the other. With my fork, you generally only need to adjust one of the legs. In any event, I wouldn't be too concerned about making everything exact, since it's generally very difficult to make the fork legs move independently.
