Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I had planned to pick up map 6 of the Southern Tier Route and ride to Pensacola Florida, but my left knee thought otherwise . . . Just returned Monday night, and put this page up documenting. Enjoy!

Have a safe ride Oldbiker Guy. I started out to do it in 7. But I really enjoyed my new buddies so I backed off the plan. Plus with the knee problems, I couldn't have done it anyway. The only advice I might offer is Enjoy!

OkaY! Thanks.
I'll let you know how it goes. Looks like it will be a wet start. :(

I would greatly appreciate the tour report upon your return! Looking forward to it. You might want to avoid Witchdance. A guy was shot in the back of the head the night before I arrived there. A worker told me it was a drug deal gone bad. I had already decided to try and make Jeff Busby when I learned of it. He said it had become a rather popular spot of drug deals . . . Not a hiker/biker campground that I could recommend . . . .

Thanks for the kind words netcelt! As is your tour report well written and great photos. But seeing your Bike E made me a little sad. They were such an innovative bike company. One only needs to look at the Cannondale easy rider to see where they got their inspiration for a recumbent! Please drop me a line when you finish the Trace. I am already looking forward to hearing about your adventure!

Well, we made it all the way to Natchez in 8 days as planned.
501 total miles. We enjoyed, but if I do it again I will plan a day of rest after 3 or 4 days. My 12 speed and I did fine. We averaged 62 miles per day.
51 miles the shortest day, 71 the longest (2 times).
We camped a Meriwether-Lewis, bike only at Colbert Ferry, hotel in Tupelo, stealth camped in Mathiston behind the old Red Kap plant, bike only in Kosicusko, hotel in Jackson, Rocky Springs, B&B in Natchez.
I'm ready to do a century ride, now that my legs are primed for it.
Met Willie Jenkins and a fella called Bean. Willie was headin' wherever the easy money was, Bean was headin' for LBL in KY.

I met Willie too . . Got a kick out of him. Here is the Thread (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=52634) Didn't meet Bean. As long as you didn't meet a fellow on a late 90's model Cannondale . . . If you weren't on a Cannondale touring bike, with Arkel Panniers, you were not a true touring Cyclist according to him . . . . . . Trailers, or more than two sets of clothes, were according to him, "ignorant" . . . . . I checked the weather, and it looked like you guys had rain the first two days???

I had heard of Willie before from somewhere on the web.
It did rain some Sat and Sunday, but never very heavy or very long. It wasn't a problem.
Weather was pretty good all week. It got pretty warm (90) by the time we got to Jackson, but that was as warm as it got. Friday night in Rocky Springs the temp was very comfortable.
I did the Trace two years ago in March. How was the detour around Jackson? I did it on a Friday and it was "real fun" around the new office parks that were being built along the detour. Lost count of the number of times I almost became a hood ornament.

The detour 'round Jackson wasn't any better. We did it on a Friday too. We saw several workers working on the unfinished part of the Trace near Presidents Park. They were doin' a good job leanin' on their shovels. Seems like they're takin' their sweet time finishing the Trace through Jackson.
