Could anyone give me some hints on how to disassemble my Shimano 636 pedals (the red ones) for service? I can't figure out how to remove the spindle to get at the bearings.

Thanks in advance.

on the outside of your pedal(the opposite side of the side facing your frame) there should be a but around an axle, un screw that bolt then you can take the pedal off of the axle and do what you want

Use the grey plastic tool to pull the spindle asm. If you try to do it with a pair of pliers you may crack the threaded insert and it will be really hard to remove as well as being trashed.

you have to remove the front and rear plates (the black bits) then the outer red bit will come off. The inner red bit is located by a small screw. Once all this is off, there is a spring in the outer end which may fall out, and is a real mongrel to get back in. Remove the press in cap that this spring goes into and then you will need a small (8mm I think) socket and extension to undo the locknut in the end.

oh. and the bearings are really tiny.

Does anyone know a part number of and/or where I may be able to find the proper tool?

Call around to some bikeshops and ask for the Shimano spindle removal tool. At least one is bound to have some on the wall or a couple in the shop.
When you use this tool, it will pull the spindle and bearings out as an assembly, that you can grease and adjust. There is no need to take it completely apart.

danscomp.com has a variety of park tools and bench tools go there and check it out

if your 636's are the same as mine the tool won't work. which is why I tried to explain it in such detail......
