A 37-year-old Sacramento bicyclist died after being hit by a vehicle Sunday night.

The incident occurred at 4:40 p.m. at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard near 44th Avenue. Arcadio Gallardo was riding his bicycle on northbound Martin Luther King in the bicycle lane ahead of a vehicle, a California Highway Patrol news release states.

Gallardo veered into the traffic lane directly in front of the vehicle driven by a 21-year-old woman. The collision knocked Gallardo off his bicycle into the woman's vehicle, the CHP said.

He suffered major head trauma and was taken to the UC Davis Medical Center where he died about 11 p.m. Sunday, authorities said.

The investigation is continuing, and witnesses are asked to call the South Sacramento CHP office at (916) 681-2300 or the Sacramento Communications Center at (916) 861-1300.
