So tonight is the night.. When I bought my bike, I knew it had a quality frame with so-so components (mixed Tiagra/105). I planned on one day upgrading the components when I came across a good deal. Well, a buddy of mine is parting out his TT bike, since he only put a few hundred miles on it, and sold me his year old Ultegra/DA mixed component set for a killer deal. Now, I have been on a triple for the last season (since it came with the bike) and there are some descent hills around here (though nothing *too bad*), but I am hoping I can make the transition. To make things easier, I bought a 12-27 cassette, so it shouldn't be too big a change. Sorry 'bout the random ramblings.. just excited to try out the new components!! (now I just have to find the money for those killer TT wheels as well.. lol)

Cool! good luck! I hope you made sure the FD will attached to your frame (Brazed on vs. clamped/diameter)...
keep us posted and take pictures! :)

Better to go for a SRAM 12/26 cassette...

What is the advantage? I can always order one and send the Ultegra one back..

keep the Ultegra...I think you will like the 39 chainring...I assume you had a 42 middle chainring on the triple.

Yup, moving from the 52-42-30 to a 53-39. Hopefully I'll be able to power it up some of the steeper ones around here.. lol

I did the same about a year ago. Better set up for me and the terrain I ride on here in central Mass (rolling hills) - I really like the 39. I have a 12-25 cassette.

Combine a SRAM cassette and a SRAM chain and you get both better shifting and lower weight than Shimano.

Well, I did it! :) I now have a DA/Ultegra 2 ring Tourmalet.

I ended up sticking with the shimano chain and cogset this time around, though I may upgrade to the SRAM when these wear out. I just couldnt find the extra money to buy the SRAM.. because I BOUGHT THE WHEELS TOO! :D I figured, what the heck.. I wont find a deal like this ever again..

So I put an 11-23 on the new wheels (Shimano 7701s), and a 12-27 on the old wheels (Ksyrium Elites), so I can take the Ksyriums out when I am doing the steeper hills around here, and take the Shimano's out when I am riding the flatlands... I bet you can guess what I'll be riding today ;).

Congrats!

You don't need a tripple.
