Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Team Clydesdale Rides Again! Tour de Cure in Boiling Springs, May 30

Team Clydesdale, AKA Bautieri, vXhanz, and The Historian, are reuniting to ride the Tour de Cure in Boiling Springs, PA, on Saturday, May 30. You can read about the ride at:

We haven't registered the team yet, but it should be up in a day or so. Any clydes and athenas that want to ride for a good cause are welcome to join us. Bautieri is our team captain, and I'm sure he'll be along at some point to provide more details.

Ok, details as follows:

Boiling Springs is mainly farm land and quite gorgeous at that. The terrain will be quite comparable to the Lancaster Covered Bridge ride only minus the road apples and A-hole tourists that Lancaster county is saturated with that time of year. In college I volunteered to assist in this tour de cure operating my ham radio from a SAG vehicle, so I can say that the terrain is rolling but not too bad. Only one or two memorable uphill slogs. Rest stops are well stocked (or were 5 years ago) and the course itself is generally on low traffic roads.

Fundraising wise, the more people we get the less we have to raise per person. A team of five or more is only required to raise a minimum of $750 to participate. That works out to $150 each. If we get ten people then it's $75 each and so on and so forth. Not that we should look at it that way but the more people we get the larger the donation pool becomes.

I'm not sure what else to add at this point other than that I am available to plot out some training rides and field questions.

What's up with 105.7? I do listen sometimes.

I was on the same team last year. We did 43 of the planned 63 in the rain. What a drag. We even did the optional 3 mile climb. Of course, on our way down the sky opened up. Let's hope it stays nice and dry this year.

One of the guys on there, Earl David Reed uses "snapperhead" as a retort to people who call periodically. It's the only time I've heard of it, so I thought you might listen to the "X".

I hope so, I've never ridden the course before so it might be fun to do.

The course is nice. Nice rollers and one optional 3 mile glimb.

Bump! Little more than three weeks left. I've done one long ride of 34 miles. Can The Historian get into a shape other than round for the ride?

The Historian is still pretty round, but he should be able to complete the metric century. Also, he's going to shave his head for the ride provided he's raised 500 dollars by 8:00 Am DST Friday May 29. See the link below.

The weather cooperated for the Tour de Cure in Boiling Springs this year. Last year it rained, but Saturday this time was dry with temperatures in the mid 70s. The only drawback was a headwind - and it was always a headwind, never a kindly tail-breeze.

The three members of Team Whatever - the former Team Clydesdale - rode together to the first rest stop 15 miles out, but then separated. The Historian reached the split between the 50K and 100K routes, and decided to not spend his afternoon battling Central PA rollers and the headwind. He took the shorter route, took pictures, and had a great time. Bautieri and vXhanz did the complete 68 mile route, including the 4 mile continuous uphill into King's Gap, a state park.

The Tour de Cure routes passed through downtown Carlisle, the seat of Cumberland County. I was tempted to ride off course into the historic district and take photos, but with the rider number on my back I feared I'd be seen by other Tour participants and followed. So on the way back to my hotel in Harrisburg I stopped in the middle of this 250 year old town. And I was rewarded by seeing the old jail. How often do you see replicas of a Norman castle in an American city?

If Carlisle were in Europe, American tourists would travel to spend a morning or afternoon visiting. But instead they drive by it on the Turnpike or other highway. Pity.

How many people were in the tour? I was going to go but a duathlon in New York was the same day. I am a diabetic, so thanks for riding for us.
