I basically do two types of cycling, transport and sport. I always do the transport form since I am carfree which consist mostly of runs less than five miles away there are some that are up to 40 miles but not that often. Sport were I ride as for fun and cover 20-40 miles 3-5 days a week and maybe a century a month. Well sometimes I will take a month or two off from the sport one usuall winter time just not a big fan of the cold and sometimes during the summer. Well I was riding with a cycling club the other day and one of the riders was really hurting said he hasn't ridden in a couple of months. When comming off one of my breaks it is really no biggie for me to hop on the bike and do century I notice my speed drops after the breaks but thats really it. Hell I am even a moderate smoker and drink also. Does anyone else notice this?

Yep, sounds like me exactly.
I take the three months of toronto's winter off..
It'll take a few weeks to get back but a lot less than it used to..
Cheers!

i haven't owned a car for over 5yrs.
i ride all the time
i have a Surly Big Dummy, a Pug, a Hunter 29er, and a Fondriest road bike.
i even quit my job about 1.5yrs ago...
i do all those things, go on tours, run errands, you name it.
right now I'm all geeked out on my road bike, doing about 30hrs/wk on the bike
today was 100 miles in 5:37hrs with some screwing around, soft pedal, etc...
all in prep for The Solvang Double...
the more you ride, it is probable you will get better at it.
the more you focus on it, the more weight you can haul around, the further you can go, the more independent you can be (solo touring), it all comes together.
even better if you can get some back country off road solo touring.
yes... ride your bike.
:-)
