Hi!
I'm new here and to road bikes, but want to know what are some good LD rides for fun and training that the more experienced local roadies like to ride. I am riding in the Ride to Conquer Cancer in June. So I was hoping to maybe do an overload ride a month before the ride itself.
I am going to try the Calgary to Cochrane and maybe further up the 1A for sure. I live in the west end so I think going to Elbow Falls would be a fun one. Anything going East or directly south? What about in and around town?

Hi,
instead of heading west towards elbow falls - nice hilly ride BTW- try taking the 762 due south to millarville, take the 549 back up to priddis then either west again on the 22 to Bragg creek or east towards the SW end of the city lots of people do this ride it should be easy to hook up out on the road.
I'm also doing the cancer ride, i live in the NW contact me offline I'd be happy to show you some routes.

Go Flames Go!
The snows insane buds,
I was enjoying the nice riding weather, and roads were just starting to almost be completely dry as well!
Well, it really depends upon what kind of training you like to do. As you are in the West I'd suggest Highway 8 out to the traffic circle, South to Bragg Creek, then West to Forget-me-not Pond. That has some nice straights with little elevation gain (head out early to avoid wind and have wind at your back on the way back if you are lucky), then some good climbs.
For the way back, take 22X all the way back till you can turn North back into Calgary, you'll take 24th street which goes straight to Glenmore, then can take some bike trails (otherwise you are on 14th and Glenmore and while I ride that from time to time, the bike trails are nice relaxing ride). At Glenmore you are back over the reservoir and can head home.
As I live in the SW, I use 22X a lot (when I'm off my ass and riding), both directions depending upon what I want to do. Can easily get in 100 to 150+ kilometer rides. And, once close to Bragg Creek there is highway 20 North and South.

NW here too, I'll be up for a leisurely ramble through Millarville and points beyond, when i get my road bike up and sorted. Should be done in a couple of weeks, coincidentally, thats approximately when Spring might arrive. :p
Picking up this years new upgrade tomorrow.
Will post pics.
Hope we can get a group ride going.

If you're a fairly brisk rider, and if you really want to get into long distance riding, you might be interested in this club: http://www.albertarandonneurs.com/index.html
