Beyonce fans 'among least intelligent but Beethoven fans are cleverest'

Your taste in music reflects your intelligence with fans of Beyonce among the most stupid and Beethoven listeners the cleverest, it is claimed.

Fans of Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z also ranked poorly in terms of IQ and lovers of rapper Lil' Wayne were deemed least intelligent.

The study was carried out by Virgil Griffiths, a PhD student in America, who compared students' scores in SAT exams with their favourite music acts and genres by analysing data on social networking sites.

Those who prefer indie music are most intelligent, while pop, rock and gospel fans were all ranked at the lower end of the scale.

Fans of legendary acts like Queen, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Sinatra and Bob Marley are all around average and above when it comes to intelligence, according to Griffiths.

Radiohead, U2 and Bob Dylan all have intelligent fans, he said.

Fans of Beyonce, Timberlake and Jay-Z all tended to score below 1,000 on SAT scores, with the average being a mark of 1071 out of 1600.

Fans of Beethoven were way ahead of the rest with an average score of over 1300.

On his website, musicthatmakesyoudumb, Griffith describes the results of his study as "hilarity incarnate".

He introduces the test by saying: "I've listened to artists who after listening to I thought to myself 'Wow... loving this rubbish says a lot about someone and how much they got going on in their head'. Could one's musical tastes say something about intelligence?"

The only thing is, a lot of people who say they like Beethoven really don't, just like a lot of folks who claim to read Proust have a library full of Stephen King. I think it would be more accurate to say "People who claim to like Beethoven, but really like AC/DC are more intelligent than those who watch American Idol." I could agree with that.

I like it all, from Queen to Vampire Weekend to Led Zeppelin to Kraftwerk toJohn Spencer Blues Explosion to Goldfrappe to The New York Dolls to Duran Duran to David Bowie to The Sea and Cake. That being said, I'd much rather have a beer with people who listen to Classic Rock than the freakin' trust~fund kids who like Indie Rock, for the most part.

This sample indicates there is no association of intelligence to music preference.

I have to say this - I was at a high society function recently. It was a charity event, for a good cause. There were various groups attached to the efforts and one was a very high profile classical music organization. At the end of the evening a soloist from that organization performed.

I am not a music expert or anything but I know sloppy and poor intonation when I hear it. Maybe the soloist had too much champagne. The room was filled with accomplished professionals in medicine, the arts, sciences, etc. I don't think anyone noticed the (lack of) quality in the presentation (maybe they had too much champagne?).

Point being, I do think people will front on this (music, also art, literature, etc) and it kinda hurts to see. That in no way invalidates everyone else's appreciation of things...but just sayin'

Of course not. The author himself said that his "study" was just comparing data-mining results for hilarity...:p

Maybe someone can expand the study and see if it holds true under more rigorous scrutiny?

So the boyfriend and I were national merit finalists and semi-finalists (since they used SAT scores) and like rock and metal.

Kitteh is not so smart and likes the sound of a toilet flushing. She's also more likely to lick her own butt than eat yummy fish oil, so we are talking really not smart.
