Well, I found out what's been living in the birdhouse above our deck. It fell, and when I went to put it back up it was vibrating in my hand. Apparently a whole mess of bees have turned it into their home. I threw it down into the trees real quick like when I discovered that the bees were a very protective of their comfy little home.

I only have one battle scar to show for it, but I'm sure the neighbors got their laugh for the evening.

And the bees are gone, for now.

When we were about to move into our house, my wife noticed a large amount of bees about. We found a swarm of them in a big ball in the adjoining woods at the edge of our yard. Apparently they do this when searching for a new place to make a hive. Then they'll send out scouts to figure out a new home. As we didn't want our new home and their new home to be one and the same, we called the King County Forest Preserve and they recommended a bee keeper who came out with a big shopvac cleaner attached to some odd looking boxes. As he was about to suck up the bees, he realized that the swarm was just hanging from a single branch of a dead tree so he simply clipped the branch and shoved the whole thing into a big canvas bag which he promptly threw into the back of his truck. He didn't charge us anything but sold us a jar of really delicious honey. He said he was going to transplant the bees to his beefarm.

hahaha!! that rules, lucklust!

NZLcyclist, i'm pretty sure it's a poster for the beastmaster. which...i dunno if you LIKE cheesy movies, but if you liked Masters of the Universe, starring Dolf Lundgren, you'll LOVE beastmaster. I think the "adult" rating was before the MPAA instituted the standard rating system. i think it'd be about PG-13 nowadays...but i've never seen the non-TV version...

Bees don't sound that bad.

Hornets are not very nice, though. Not only will they attack you and your lawnmower, but they don't even make honey.

I confess, after being stung by only one of these babies in the lip, I picked up a can of hornet spray and zapped their nest from 20 feet away.

Then I ran like hell.

And if that doesn't work, go back with the can and a lighter. ;)

Note - not a serious suggestion.

After my 22-0 experience(Stung 22 times in about 15 seconds, can you say"Pass me the Benadryl"), I went out with my can of high-test, hornet spray, and a lighter. Poured the gas down the hole, fired up my flame thrower (Lighter+hornet spray) and went to work. Chuck 400-Yellowjackets 0.
