i am thinking about building my new bike with DA 10-speed. the question is
whether i can slap DA 10-speed cassettes on wheels that are equipped with
Ultegra 9-speed hubs????

from reading shimano's website, i get the impression that the answer is no and
that i will have to wait for ultegra 10-speed to come out and hope that it will
be backward compatible.

yes. da 10v is backward compatible to 9sp hubs. da 10v hubs are not backward compatible to 9sp cassettes.

i was hoping that this was the case, but from Shimano's website i read (under FAQ):
----------
12.*Can I use the new 10-speed cassette on my current Shimano wheels?
The new 10-speed cassettes will be compatible with WH-7701, WH-7701-Carbon, and WH-R540* when used with a thin washer supplied with the aftermarket cassettes. In addition, you can only use the 12-25 &12-27 CS-7800 cassettes with the WH-7700 and WH-7700-Carbon wheels.
-----------

i assume that WH-7700 is referring to the Dura-Ace 9-speed free hub FH-7700. the Ultegra hub is
FH-6500 and is not listed.

7800 is the New 10 speed Dura-Ace part number.
7700 is the old 9 speed Dura-Ace part number.
All Shimano HG cassettes are slpined indentically. Shimano like to put BS on thier website to get customers to buy more expensive stuff when you don't need to.

cool. i am glad to hear this. now i ONLY need to buy a $150 DA cassette.
it ain't cheap, but it is better than having to replace hubs and rebuild the
wheel.

thanks velocipedio and dieseldan.

Do you have a DA rear shifter? If not, you're in trouble.

on my new bike, it's going to be complete DA 10-speed. so yes, i'll have a DA RD and
STI shifters. i just want to be able to use some older wheels with Ultegra hubs on the
new bike.
