any recomendations for panniers on the Kona Ute. The rack frame is large diameter tubing,,something around 5/8". The stock ones(not the long one shown on the Kona website) are a notch above garbage in that any substantial weight and bump will rip the bags right off as the steel clips are not up to the job. Yesterday I had 30lb bags of cat litter in each pannier, went gently(<1mph) off a curb and they popped right off. Last time that happened It was with a 15lb bag of charcoal and I hit a 2" bump at 10mph.

Make friends with a parachute rigger and have him design something bomb-proof?

Put some zip ties around the clips and rack, or melt some holes with a soldering iron for them to go through and go through the bag and around the rack with them. This is not an easy to remove option, but it should hold them very well.
thanks barturtle,,I was considering replacing the clips with thicker stock but now I can understand why it makes sense to have some kind of shelf or 'foot rest' under the bags so the weight is connected to the frame where it's pressing on the bag. Does't really make sense to have the entire load hang from the top of the bag then have all the flexibility of the bag allow for the load at the bottom of the bag to swing around on just two clips. I could see a solid metal rack hanging from the top but not a cloth one for carrying heavy loads. It's convenient having bags that can fold up against the frame but when they're open the weight in the bag needs to be resting on something that's more closely connected to the frame.

like he said, use zip ties.
You can also pick up some wide webbing and clips and for added support when needed.
