Mountain Biking - wheels

Im looking for a pair of wheels that can be used for both rim and disc brakes.

I found a pair of sun rynolite/shimano XT wheels at nashbar for $160.

I wanted to know what you guys think about this pair of wheels, good deal, are they good components etc.

Also, what do you think about buying used wheels? Good idea? Im kind of afraid of buying used wheels because I don't know how many miles are on them.

Also what kind of disc brakes would you recommend? I liked the avid mechs because they got good reviews and I like the price. I know they won't have the power of a good set of hydros but I don't need really strong brakes. Just something better than the v's I have right now.

Right now you can get an effective 28% off that making them $115.20. I would say that is a great deal on a wheelset that should be very strong if built right. Beware though, they are quite heavy, probably around 2400g.

I have never used Avid Mechs, but I hear they are excellent. I plan on buying a similar wheelset and an Avid Mech for the front when I get a bit more money here.

What color are the spokes in that wheelset? I really like black, but since it doesn't say I am guessing they are silver.

the spokes are silver. Nashbar had some all black Mavic/Deore wheels but I can't find them now, they were on sale for $89 and were disc only.

Well, I have MORE questions!

Manitou forks don't use ISO disc tabs so I need an adapter, the problem is I don't know which one to use.

whether or not you need an adapter depends on what brakes you will be running. my avid mechs bolted directly onto the manitou post mount. running larger rotors, though, requires the use of an adapter specific to avid.

btw the disc xt/rhinolites weigh about 2100-2200g not 2400g.
i got the xt/singletracks for around that price, and they've held up well over these last 5 months.

yay! Im going to run avid mech discs too! So I don't need an adapter in order to use the avids?

I guess that weight is probably true. I took it from an estimate at Jenson USA, but I just looked and it included the quick releases in the weight.

In my previous post I was agreeing that the wheels are probably really around 2200g. Jenson includes quick releases in all of their posted weights, and most other places do not.

I'm running XT hubs (750 series from last year non-splined) laced to Rhynolites and absolutley loving them.

When I bought my SPecialized Stumpjumper last year, I got the bike shop to buy back the Shimano hydraulic brakes so i could use my 2 yr old Avids off my old Hardtail. They brake just as well as hydraulics and they are easier to adjust and maintain than rim types, not to mention the hassel of maintaining hydraulics.

While I live in N Forida, I bike a lot in the N Georgia mountains and sometimes in Moab. Avids are all you need.

Yes. SingleTracks are not super wide rims and will hold a 2.1.

Alright. Now I know what im going to do.

Im going to go for the Sun/Powertools wheels and use the 2.1 IRC Mythos tires(or is it tyres?) off of the wheels I have now. Ill be using a Manitou black platinum fork and a cane creek Double Xc headset(it's both a headset and a reducer) with Avid mech disc brakes.

Maybe get a pair of the avid brake levers later.
