when i really dig in to a heavy gear or climb out of the saddle, i've been getting a creaking noise. figuring it was the BB, i tightened it up, but that didn't solve it.

i think it's coming from the wheels. with the wheel leaning up against the wall, i can kind of flex it back and forth and get that sound out of it.

i recall having a similar problem on another set of wheels (DA hubs laced to open pros) and it was solved by placing a drop of lube on each spoke nipple and giving the wheel a good spin. i am inherently more wary of these composite pre-built-type wheels, however.

the wheels have under 2k miles on them. all the spokes feel tight. the hubs could probably stand to be tightened a tiny bit, but nothing that's hurting my ride.

does this issue sound familiar to anyone, or do you think i'm ok with a little lube?

Brunning,

Sure, drop a little bit of lube at the point where the spokes cross and touch, but wipe off any excess (it will attract dirt). That may be the issue.

There are a couple of other possibilities as well (I recently had a similar problem):

1. Cassette creaking - I had a creaking noise that happened under load. Though it was the spokes - lubed them, but no good. Ended up rebuilding the wheel (rim cracked, so it had to be done) and the noise was still there - so it had to be on the hub. I recognised that the creak only happened under load, and only in the three largest cogs on the cassette. I pulled the cassette off and checked it out. The three largest were attached to an aluminim carrier (Campag Chorus) with rivets, and I though that perhaps one was loose, and causing the creak. I cleaned everything up, and put a tiny drop of locktite on each rivet (waited until it was fully dry) - voila, noise gone! Make sure that the cassette lockring is pretty tight too. Won't hurt to (very) lightly smear any metal on metal contact surfaces in the cassette either.

2. Cartridge bearings - recently has another very alarming "crack" noise from my single speed from the rear (was running a Hugi 240 rear hub). It was the bearings moving about. I knocked the bearings out, and refit them with a little grease on all the metal/metal contact points. Sorted.

Good luck.

Iv got factory built da22 alex rims done 3600 km's black spokes, kept beaking spokes, the bike shop suggested they were crap mass produced spokes, they rebuilt the rim with slightly larger diameter spokes and nipples under warranty, that was a week ago all was sweet.Iv since fitted shimano cleated peddles now there's a creak simmula to yours in the rear end.May be this noise is more noticeable now because of more power going to the backwheel. This frustrating as the bike is only 6months old.Il check the hub ect.Iv yoused vas between the spokes as oil tens to flick onto the brake surface.

Try placing a drop of oil where spokes cross each other. I've seen this on regualr spokes as well as composite spokes (Spinergy wheels) when a creaky noise was present.

A riding buddy of mine had this issue and eliminated the seat post, cranks, cassette, hub and so on. We moved the wheel to my bike and it did the sqeaky - creaky thing.

We placed a small amount of lube at each crossing, wiped the excess of and no more squeaky wheel.

Give it a try if the lubed nipples doesn't solve it.

check the quick releases...heard that these can be an issue...just try some others if you have them around.

btw, a drop of lube rubbed on to the crossing point of the spokes fixed this!
