It really is in practically flawless shape...
doesnt seem like its really been ridden, theres a tiny amount of surface rust from weather and little to no scratches anywhere.
Old U lock that he doesnt have the key for, bolt cutters should work.

You can see in the photos the dropouts are pretty generic.

Great find !,it,s begging to be kept original,rack has got 2 go,nice set of "Mavic,s" would look good,if stem IS "AVA" ditch it (coz its da DEATH stem) replace with either ATAX or PIVO stem instead which is still period correct,so my friend its wash , polish, and polish some more ! D@mn,wish it was mine (did I say that out loud ?)

I have a Phillipe Bar/Stem combo I was going to switch it out with, if it fits.

I have heard of AVA's breaking isssues.

I associate smooth derailleur pulleys with the early sixties. That's in great shape.

there's the rub: it's got great details, but it ain't 531. That's some sort of straight-gauge steel tubing sourced from Peugeot, and stamped dropouts. Add in the huret allvit and cottered crank and it's closer to a UO-8 than a PX.

I have been looking for a PX10, and the fact that this isnt a lightweight doesnt bother me... I have 3 other bikes with Reynolds or Columbus.

You all might think I'm tearing up the originality of the bike, or taking away its French Purity...

But I'm switching out the Allvit drive and putting Nuovo Record from around the same time.

I'm not a fan of the Allvit stuff, it looks and functions too much like Schwinn Approved Huret deraileurs.


Anyways I'm very excited to get this thing on the road. Thanks everyone for appreciating and confirming what I thought was an excellent score.

I don't blame you in the least for that equipment swap. I think a Gran Sport might look a little more in place than a Nuovo Record, but they aren't as plentiful. As long as they shift and can wrap the chain you need. :thumb:

You should keep it French. A nice Simplex would go well on that, or even a Huret Svelto or Luxe (much better than the Alvit).

N.B. The "Schwinn Approved" was just a rebadged Alvit.

It is basically a late 1960s Peugeot UO-8, but with great-looking lugs and chrome on the stays. I like the Svelto derailleur idea, if you want to keep it French. Nice find!

I saw that one on CL, and woulda gone after it, but I've already got two '60's Peugeots I'm working on. That's a real beauty. Congratulations!

I'm not made of money or Campagnolo at the moment.

Im thinking I'll switch out the stem first, I have something arranged.

I do have early Nuovo Record F / R derailers... I'm pretty satisfied with the Durax cottereds and I do think the chain will run fine with that setup.

Unless of course anyone is willing to work out a deal on some Simplex or Huret DR's.

I'd guess no later than '65. That generation Huret derailleur wasn't used beyond about that. If you can find one, a Simplex Juy 61 Export would look nice. Whatever you choose, I'd stick with a '60's vintage derailleur set. The '62 Peugeot UO8 I'm working on had DFV wingnuts on "Top Star" hubs laced to the same Rigida rims.

Post some pics when you get it cleaned and tweaked. Nice bike.

The great thing about that bike, is you can see, at that time, they cared just as much for the lower end bikes as the higher end when they were building them. I agree, the Huret Luxe works pretty well, though any French stuff from the period, if in good shape should work fine. Classy bike...
