Does anyone know where in SoCal there might be a 46cm Long Haul Trucker I can test drive in the next week? Sometimes it seems that bikes only hypothetically come in my size. Even Orange 20, a wonderful LBS with lots of steel bikes and even lots of small bikes won't order a 46 cm LHT without a substantial down payment, because the proprietor doesn't like the 26" wheels. And what's wrong with 26" wheels?
I'll probably end up with a Randonee, but I'd like to give the LHT, about which I've heard so much, a shot.

I know that the Jenson USA in Ontario and Corona keep some stock in there showrooms.. I would call them beforehand to confirm they have your size..

That's tempting, actually--Jenson told me the nearest one they could find was in Minnesota. Minnesota? But I guess I'll pass on the wee LHT and go with the wee Randonee. Thanks!
King's in Seal Beach *might* have something like that. They built me a cross check last fall and the owner said he had been getting a lot of interest in some of the Surly bikes and was considering keeping a few in stock. Now I would be surprised if he had a 46 in stock, but it can't hurt to give them a call.

I noticed you are from the San Fernando Valley area. Try this shop:

They have a lot of Surly bikes on the floor.
26" wheels make sense from a design perspective for a smaller-sized frame like you're looking for, and ultimately, I think the fit of a bike is way more significant than the wheel size. What sucks is that it's often difficult to find properly-sized bikes for people who fall outside the "average" size range. This, I believe, is a huge, under-addressed market that bike companies would be wise to jump on.
FWIW, I've been happy with my Surly (I have a 1x1 converted for street)—it's a sturdy, no-nonsense frame. I'd say it would be worth it to check out a LHT if you can find one.
