Forum Suggestions & User Assistance - should have a subforum dedicated to bike apparels...

like bike clothing, gloves, shoes etc.

i see other redundant and dedicated subforum (and no offense to those subforum) like: cyclocross, fifty plus, living car free, recreational & family, road cycling, track cycling, triathlon, utility cycling. i guess gearing and clothing aren't just that important to some ppl.

I don't understand how any of the following are redundant:
- Cyclocross
- 50+
- Car-free living
- Road cycling
- Track cycling
- Triathlon

As stated in the other threads about a dedicated clothing forum, clothing is far too often specific to the type of cycling being undertaken. What you wear when road cycling will be distinctly different from "recreational and family" cycling, different from triathlons, and different (in most cases) from commuting. Ditto on gear. These kinds of discussions are more appropriate within their own contextual subforums.

Also, not all racers are into the same type of racing. Combining the 4 you listed will end up with people having to weed through a lot of posts to find ones pertinent to their preferred type.

the problem is u have a dedicated forum for those...why not a whole subforum for just apparel? if u have a whole subforum just for 50+...y not 40+...y not 60+...y not 80+?

and no i dont want to sort thru all different subforum just to see what kind of gloves, jersey, vest, or mountain shorts ppl recommend. have them all under 1 section, which make life simpler and easy to find.

I would not recommend the same apparel for mountain biking as BMX. Or Road Cycling.

I've been thinking about the question, and have reached the conclusion that there is already enough topical diversity in the main page, and to add an apparel subforum really wouldn't serve the forums well because it would ultimately dilute the forum overall. The reason is because the very specialization of gear makes it a default topic for the specific discipline in cycling. These topics can be covered quite well, and have been covered quite well in the past in the individual existing subforums.

It was an interesting thought, yes, but after applying an analysis of cost v benefit, it turned out to be not such a good idea.

So then most threads would start like this:

OP: (Title) What gloves?
OP: What gloves should I get?
P1: What are you going to be doing?
OP: Ummm... riding my bike
P2: yeah but what kind of riding... mountain, bmx, recumbent...
OP: ohhh, yeah good question. Riding on the road.

Of those you mentioned, your best bets would be general and commuting in that order. MTB'ers would know about the shorts, but you're riding around NYC on a folder...
-Touring might be helpful, but they have such a low traffic count it could be a while before you get a response.
-Professional (road) and tri like their outfits skin tight.
-Track I've no experience, so can't comment.

Also, you might ask in your regional sub-forum. Ask what other people in your local area are using.

I have name suggestions for an apparel subforum in Triathlon. You could call it 'Dickos' or 'Sluggos'.

I'm not sure if the 'what marker pen is best for writing my race number on my arm?' questions would go in the apparel subforum or not.

I think it should be further divided into lube for dry conditions, lube for wet conditions, and lube for both wet & dry conditions. I shouldn't have to wade through all the posts of people wanting wet condition lube when i never ride in wet conditions.
