Long Distance Cycling - first century!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
so me and a buddy just up and decided we wanted to see if we could ride a 100 miles today. 7hours 10 minutes later we ended with a final mileage of 100.67! Both of us where whooped, but it was a great practice run to work out all the kinks for our 450 mile ride in may. Didn't take near enough water and only a couple power bars each, so needles to say at the end of the ride we pigged out on some food and felt like crap for a good few hours. So we're going for another one next week, hopefully we will be more prepared and be able to go a little faster. Natchez trace in may 440 miles in 4 days woot!!

That's a pretty impressive time for your first! Mine took about three hours longer, not including rest breaks. What sort of terrain and bike were you on?

Congrats! I still haven't done a century, and I wish I could try this weekend, but I'm finally getting back on the bike from a injury induced sabbatical.
Good luck on the next one.

congrats im planning on doing Natchez Trace April of 2010 with my family. I have put together a great deal of information as far as history of the land marks on your journey and camping and food information. i would be happy to share if you like..

Nicely done. The first century is a milestone; doing it self-supported is even more impressive.

Good job, dude. A century is a big accomplishment. And you had a pretty good time too.

Welcome to the club - you're now officially "long distance cyclists".

thanks so much guys! I feel great today as well, kinda expected to be sore as crap, but everything feels good. Yeah I was really shocked that we completed it so quickly, me and just one other guy, It was a really thrown together idea, didn't really pick a route out before hand, just sorta left out from the house and rode to places i used to drive as a kid, mainly around a huge lake that connects 3 counties. The roads where pretty hilly, but nothing huge to speak of, just alot of rollers. It was a blast an i feel even better about it today, I can honestly say I'm hooked!!
Thanks for the welcome to the club as well!
Great job!!! Next achievement come west and do one of the doubles in the Triple Crown Series.

That part surprised me too. My sit bones were sore when I got home after my first, but everything was completely fine the next day.
yeah i'd love to come try a double or triple, but i'm sure that would be pushing myself a little farther than I should without some more 100's under my belt. The sit bones where a little tender, but not sore to the point it kept me of my lbs' local club ride! although i did stay near the back of the pack ha

Did the Natchez in 2007-- from Nashville to Tupelo. Great road for riding.

I think feeling like crap always follows a first century, at least one unplanned and unprepared for. Congrats!

Just by coincidence I was driving through Natchez Trace on vacation today with my family. Unfortunately I am not on my bike though. Looks like such a great place to ride though, smooth, clean roads with minimal traffic! Have a great time!
awesome, again thanks for the replies fellas! I've done a few short rides in the days following the century and plan on doing another one next week. Well actually plan on doing one sat followed by one sunday. Just to make sure we are going to be okay doing 4 days in a row of it. Ordering some good travel bags for the bike and gonna be sure to take plenty of food and water this time. Should be a good time. Thanks for all the advice everyone and yes I'm totally looking forward to my Natchez Trace ride in may!
