General Cycling Discussion - Gravity Bike + worl road downhill speed record ?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hello there!
I want to present my new web www.gravityspain.com about Gravity Bike ( road downhill with adapted BMX's without pedals ).
It has a nice photo gallery and thre breathtaking on board videos... I hope you like it ! :D
We've reached 92 Km/h = 58 Mph and we expect to reach 130 Km/h = 81 Mph
Does anyone know which is the road cycling top speed world record on a downhill ?
I know that Outchakov clocked 114 Km/h = 71 Mph in a Giro de Italia downhill...
Thank you...

Wrecked at 107mph going down a volcano.

you have a long way to go. I've done 60-ish with my roadbike. Heck, I've done over 50 on my Mtn. bike.

In March of 1998 when Christian Taillefer of France headed down a Glacier at the Speed Ski Slope in Vars, France, he maintained control of all of his wheels on this icy slope while setting a new speed record of 132 mph
(this next guy cheated in my opinion, and dosent deserve all the records he holds. Slipstream, ha with no wind it would be like I set my roller stand to nothing and just clicked into a tall ass gear)
Fastest Bicycle Speed
The highest speed ever achieved on a bicycle is 268.831 km/h (167.043 mph), by Fred Rompelberg (The Netherlands) at Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah, USA, on October 3, 1995. His record attempt was greatly assisted by the slipstream from his lead vehicle.

That was on a custom mtb on a volcano...no roadie there.

I think it's pretty cool to bomb down at 100+mph, roadie or not.

I didn't say it wasn't. But he was asking about on a road bike.
and yeah...the frame was wrecked. The guy is lucky he didn't die.

I don't think the type of riding capi is talking about could be considered road or mountain. . .it's tucked into a niche all its own.

upon re-reading the post and visiting the site...yes indeed it is in a niche of it's own. capi, you are NUTS!!!

He did it a year or two earlier but only hit 130 no wrecks then. That hill is used for speed skiing record atempts, I think the skiiers have hit 140 or there about.
I don't see why the frame would come apart, the wheels, tires, hubs, head tube maybe, but not the frame. :)

As I recall from the video footage, the carbon fibre frame snapped near the "downtube" portion.

I would've thought the dropouts or headset would give out first. I'm guessing he kicked up a chunk of rock that sliced through the outer surface of the downtube's weave and the stress riser tore it up.

Wow, I haven't seen gravity bikes in years. There were a couple around here in the late eighties, but the hils here aren't long enough. You don't have any f-1 bikes do you?

I saw that video on some dorky show called something like 'The most Insane things ever' or something like that. Anyway that was just crazy NUTS holy shmoly. They said the carbon frame broke. And the it was the second run that day can you imagine that. I mean I like speed but thats just suicide. Makes for a good video though...

Headtube is part of the frame. Andthe moment it broke he has hit a dip or soemthing forcing all of the suspension to compress. When it bottomed out that compression went to the frame. The frame just snapped in 2 like butter. Funniest/scariest thing I ever saw.
He did it earlier on a Giant-DH pro bike. Stock frame with light parts. That was always his bike of choice until he tried this prototype.

I'll bet it is his bike of choice now after that.

The one I'm talking about is in france and not a volcano but a speed skiing glacier, on a Peugeot bicycle. I'm confused who is the fool on the volcano in nicaraugra?
What kind of dumbass would use a light carbon bike for gravity racing anyway? Weld up a straight gage steel frame and fill it with molten lead and cast all accesories/parts from iron, then strap a scuba weight belt with 100lbs of lead to your waist and then cover yourself in an aerodynamic suit. Thats how you win gravity races.

I'm a big fan of carbon fibre but it does have its place. I'm also questioning the wisdom of using carbon fibre on a pure gravity downhill run. I do honestly think you can design a CF downhill sled but why bother? There's pretty much no advantage.

That Peugeot is nuts. Of course, so are the people doing these things, so I guess it's only fitting. :p

that fall off the cliff didn't look too bad really. he did the right thing by tucking in...i was expecting like, a straight down fall...that was more of a low-speed roll. glad he came out of it okay.
