My regular training partner & I were going for our regular ride at Waco's Cameron Park. The course is nestled among several cliffs on the banks of the Brazos River. The course is very technical and has sent many a rider to the ER! :injured: Because of the numerous dangerous trails for beginners the Bike Club had marked all the trails with "ski slope" type signage.

We had decided to mix it up a little on this day.We started out on a double black diamond down hill. The decent has stair step rocks with a medley of roots and ruts. I'm not versed on grades but the angle of the decent is about 45degrees.

At the beginning of the decent my left foot popped out of the clip!. At this point I was already moving too fast to stop and now I picked up even more speed!! The bike was out of control and blasting WAY too fast!! I managed to ride it out all the way to the bottom when ALL hell broke loose!!

There was a washed out rut running across the trail. My front wheel planted firmly in the rut and flipped me over the bars!! I landed on a boulder in the upper back region. Immediately I was unable to move and was seeing stars.

My riding buddy, Jorge, was right behind me. He had to leap off his bike and grab a small tree to stop without hitting me. (which he did to my amazement). Jorge is a paramedic on the fire department for the company he works for. First thing we did was try to assess my injuries. I had no feeling in my back area. I was able to move my feet and hands. Since my head was downhill, we first figured a way to get my head up hill. I was really scared of what possibly could be damaged.

Jorge got my cell phone from my camelback pack and called an ambulance. When the ambulance arrived, they were unable to access me from the top. The terrain was too rugged and steep. They called in the fire department to come up the Brazos river in a boat!!!

That was THE most painful boatride of my life. I was thankful to be feeling the pain though. When we reached the marina were the ambulance was waiting, I heard one paramedic say, Oh ****!!. I asked what? and he said we are gonna be on the news!! LOL

What a day!!!

ps. I was NOT riding the bike I am selling! LOL

Hope you're going to be OK. Boat ride might have been rough but at least they didn't drag you back up the slope in a Stokes at the end of a double-drum yarder ;).

Sorry!

Starting going carpel.........

The impact caused me to lose peripheral vision in my left eye, Broke 4 ribs, all right near the spine on my upper back.

Couldn't move anything without extreme pain for several weeks. Never got my vision back.

My camelback probably save me from breaking my spine.

That was probably the scariest part.........laying there thinking about some overweight paramedics trying to carry me up that hill! LOL

Thanks! This crash actually happened in 1999. It took me 2 years to get to riding.

I actually posted this story in hopes of hearing some other stories of crashes that couldn't keep you down!

Maybe it's not a good subject!

Exactly!! Must have been a slow news day!

Actually this was on the side of a famous cliff that has claimed many lives, Lovers Leap. They probably thought someone went over LL on a bike! LMAO.

Jesus, I didn't realize that Cameron Park was that dangerous. Maybe I need to skip the Greenbelt and head up there.

Glad you are ok (kind of)

now as bad as yours, but short story is, rear wheel clipped on a gap = faceplant, concussion, I don't actually remember the crash, or the next 5 hours, and the hours before that are a bit patchy. Only kept me off the bike for about 2 weeks, but i stuck to light xc at first and didn't actually get back out to where i wrecked until a few weeks ago (crash in nov) would gone sooner but winter...

do you ever thing that if you'd had the stuff we have now back in 99 you might not have gotten hurt (better pedals and stronger brakes)

I don't understand why you picked up speed when your foot came out. Couldn't you hang back and get on the brakes hard? That lip pic grosses me out every time I see it!

It was the perfect storm, is all I can figure. The decent was too steep and rugged for any brakes to do much. It required controlled braking all the way. When the foot popped out, in a split second, I looked down....my attention was diverted from braking and I gained just enough speed to render the brakes useless. I was working the brakes all the way down with no help.

sirtigersalot, That lip is knarly. Faceplant?

We started out on a double black diamond down hill.

Why?

I ask myself that all the time!! LOL

We were training for an upcoming race and had been riding every day. I guess we were just bored doing the same thing every time. We had been down that trail many times.

Like I said in an earlier post, "the perfect storm"

Ray

ps. No one else has had a bad crash? :o

I've not had anything really bad, so I'm quite worried.

But right after I got my bike, I was going down a hill and I some how managed to crash (at around 25, and on the street), not honestly sure how, I think I may have gotten a conclusion because I sure dont remember the crash, or right before. I THINK I broke my nose, and I hurt my wrist (It wasnt broken, so like the idiot I am, I decided I didnt need to wear the brace, and now my wrist hurts from time to time).
