Can someone point me in the right direction? I want to file the ridges off of my Record crank before it cracks into a bajillion little pieces...

I highly recommend searching there, and in fact, joining CR as a member, because then you can post questions.

Between the two you should find just about everything that's out there, or folks who have read all of it.

Does this happen only on the Campy NR? How about Veloce?

Any sharp corners where there is stress is suceptable to stress cracks. Rounding off the sharp corner will greatly reduce the risk of cracks. a small round file or a "rat tail' file is all you need. then some emery paper and perhaps one finer grit paper. I like to wrap the paper around the file when I get to that point. The cranks you have are 1984 and have low miles... be sure to remove the chainrings first. You shouldn't have to worry to much or go crazy with the filing as these cranks have no sign of cracks yet... just round it out and make sure it's nice and smooth. There should be some photos in that thread of cranks I had to file "heavily"..

On fairly long existing cracks I'd try drilling a hole the head off the crack first. That one even worked on my car's windshield to prevent a small crack from traveling far.

After revisiting, that old filing cranks thread was pretty short, maybe we could start one here?

But as for files, I was going to use a "chainsaw file," it was round and what they had at the hardware store, is that the right guy?
