Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Public Access at Lehigh Valley Velodrome-- how does it work?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

A few friends of mine and i were thinking about giving public access at our local track a try; if we like it, we may make it a regular thing for fun/sprint workouts without traffic/etc.

I went to their site, but am having trouble finding out days/times/etc:
http://www.lvvelo.org/publicaccess.php

1) anyone try it before? what sort of schedules do they offer the public?
2) what's it like? packed? empty? is it a good idea for a few "relatively fast" sprinters looking to work on speed intervals (ie, are there little kids everywhere, etc)?

tia.

on a related note, i currently ride bullhorns with a threaded stem (cinelli grammo pista ti).
if i do this, i'd much rather ride drops, which means new stem/bars.
it doesn't appear like it would be an issue, but does anyone know if repeated swapping of threaded stems can cause eventual issues, or is this type of wear OK? i would likely only ride the drops when i went to lehigh.

I believe that it is a public park. Last fall, I went to the track for the first time to go to the swap meet. I went back later mid-week in the morning and it was completely open. No admission, no waivers to sign -- nothing. In fact, the only employee on scene was a parks maintenance man and I was the only rider on the track.

i'm racing there this year. you should take an intro class if you are new to the track.

nice try, but we covered that in the first post.

I've heard before that it's just open to the public whenever there are no races. So Friday and Saturday are out.

so wait, whenever? like, if there's a race that night, it's public access that morning? including saturdays?

That's what I recall. Whenever there is no scheduled event you can just hop on, like a community pool or basketball gym. But do be prepared to be kicked out.

I'd probably not go on Friday or Saturday because there might be some earlybird racers who want to use the track for awhile.

KEEP IN MIND: I have no sources or no proof, so I may be wrong.

T-Town is awesome. Have fun. I can't wait to race there again this season.

Don't worry about wear on a threaded stem. Not gonna be an issue.

this is both invaluable and worthless at the same time. disclaimers are awesome...

funny. if you read the site it would have answered most of the questions you asked. we've discussed your reading comprehension skills before. if you need a tutor, i am available most evenings. :-D

I couldn't find anything about hours either. If it's a public park, they may have dawn/dusk hours, which is pretty much the only time you'd want to be their anyway
