Southeast - South Florida Newbie

Hey guys I need some help... I recently started cycling with my MTB and have picked up a roadie to start practicing on longer rides....

being new to road cycling I will like to know if there are any groups that will tolerate newbies?

Also I am participating in this years MS150 (This is why I started riding)

What part of south FL do you live? Ask the bike shops where the local rides are. I'd suggest to start with a B or slower group to get the feel for pacelines and drafting.

LBS's usually have build up rides for the MS150s. Check with the LBS and cycling clubs in your area.

I am located in South Miami; Near Elite cycles...

I have been heading out to Shark Valley for practice rides but it gets a little boring on my own :(

I ride 4 days a week, I live in Kendall. I ride around the Redlands and Key Biscayne. I did the Shark Valley thing for a while but after 3 or 4 laps that place does get boring. Everglades Bike Club is based out of Miami, I think they have their meetings ate Elite. I think they have easier paced rides for beginners. Check out their web page. I'm doing an organized ride that they put together this sunday, the snowbird century. They seem to do a great job putting together organized rides.

Yea, I'm new to cycling too, my dad got me into it, we've being doing laps around key biscayne. That key biscayne bridge is a monster and will get you in good shape. I would definate suggest doing this. We start in Pinecrest by Pinecrest Elementry (btw there is a big group that leaves from there on Saturday Mornings), then we ride through the grove and onto key biscayne...

i know this comment is really late, but i grew up in miami, heading back there in a couple of months and just wanted to meet some people so i can go on rides together.

i live in boston currently and have lived here for a few years. started riding a few months back and now that i'm heading back home i really don't want to give it up just cuz miami's not exactly bike friendly.

I live in kendall and get a few people riding around Sable chase across from Miami Dade South, we are out there every nite after 6:30 pm, three of us have been doing 30 miles at 14 to 17 mph to the Grove and back. There are plenty safe roads around here. if you wanna join up let me know. Miami is fine to ride, people just cry too much about traffic because their scared.

haha, see one of the main reasons i began to ride was to avoid public transport and just cuz i really wanted to get into it. so i pretty much commute everywhere here on my bike. drivers are pretty crazy too, only difference is that theres a damn significant bike scene up here so they're used to seeing people bike around and i guess they're more "educated" about it. can't really say the same about miami.

i'll be moving back in with my parents for a while, so i'll be living down near country walk. anyone ride in that area?

A lot of folk ride to Key Biscayne, or drive close to it and ride,

then there is blackpoint marina, south run, on back roads, east of Homestead Air Force Base, to end of turnpike-US1 in Homestead, or going on past to "Roberts is Here" store with option to go on to Flamingo, the park entrance would be 25 miles from blackpoint, that ride can be extended to 50 or 60 miles from blackpoint if you enter the park. A friend says he has never paid, but they stopped me last time I was on an 80 mile ride.

There is about 1 mile of traffic once you cross US 1 to Roberts is Here. You can also turn south towards Key Largo from US1 to Card Sound and loop on key largo but too much traffic for me.

Many will ride to homestead marina/biscayne park for a rest stop on the way back to black point.

Some of the larger bike clubs, biketech/elite etc, will do those rides saturday and sunday early. There are many smaller groups as well. Car traffic is very light on all the back roads.

Anyone know of any rides in the Dade/Broward area that ride Friday or Saturday afternoons/evenings? All of the clubs I've seen unfortunately don't ride at those times. Those are basically the only times I'm not working and can go on an organized ride. Otherwise I'm relegated to going solo at 1am during the week after work :(
