Texas - Favorite LBS (Houston)? Parts to convert old Peugeot road bikes?

I would like to convert a couple of old Peugeot road bikes to fixed-gear/single-speed on a flip-flop hub, but I'm not really sure which bike shop in the Houston area is recommended. I know I'd like a few certain parts, like Velocity Deep V rims, but I'm clueless as to which other parts I should be looking out for. I don't need the absolute top of the line components. Instead, I'm looking for good value on some tried and true parts.

Can you guys direct me to a good bike shop here in Houston and/or some parts that would be recommended for my setup? I might try out West End Bikes (http://www.westendbikes.com/fsweall.html) tomorrow. Thanks in advance. Can't wait to start riding :thumb:

I think you may be on the right track already. If you do find those kinds of parts it will likely be inside the loop. You might try Daniel Boone Cycles (http://www.danielboonecycles.com/) They used to advertise fixed gear before it ever became a thing.

I second DBC as a great small bike shop, who are really hands on with the customer. If you don't mind corporate shops, go to Sun & Ski on Westheimer and across the street from Texadelphia. Very knowledgeable shop and won't oversell you on a product that isn't needed.

Wow, will definitely check out DBC today. It's less than five minutes from where I live! I'll let you guys know how it goes.

I know houston bicycle is has a bunch different colored rims I am pretty sure they are deep v, they have really amped up ssfg stuff lately. I hear blue line is the same but really can't say for sure only been there twice. Really all the shops I listed and previous posters are really awesome shops which ever you choose they will take care of you.

FYI dbc reall community oriented last critical mass ended at comunity center where they had special exhbit on major taylor, hbc throws a wicked cool party once a year these two shops are awesome and are cycling angels

So I went to both WEB and DBC today and ended up just getting my two Peugeots serviced rather than having them converted to single-speed (was going to end up costing a fortune). Looks like I will probably end up just purchasing another bike, which is fine. These are some great bike shops! scattered73, I will probably end up checking out HBC sometime in the near future.

I was also impressed by the selection of single-speed bikes at DBC. Too bad I can't have the bikes back today. It's freakin' beautiful outside.

Sorry to be a little late to the party here. If you don't have the spare parts, conversions can get costly. I would recommend my LBS, but since I work there, someone might think that is advertising. ;)

i hear pugs are hard to convert because of the french threading or something like that. like if you like the cranks on it it's okay but getting new cranks is hard or something. but if you're just gonna take off one of the chainrings and throw on a new wheelset then boones, blueline bike lab, and houston bicycle co would all be okay i think. those are all the ones i've visited, there's also west end and some other shops.

The easy way around that is a set of bmx/single speed chainring bolts and using one of the existing rings.
