Mountain Biking - Weird creaking noise

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Alright, so when I pedal hard (read: apply a lot of pressure to the pedals) sometimes they creak and make a weird noise. Now, on any other bike I've owned in the past I really didn't care that this happened. But, it's happening on my Kona and I need to make it stop. It hurts me when it happens, because I feel my baby is hurting in some strange way.
Anyone know what I'm talking about, and how to fix it? I tried tightening the pedal shafts to the main pedal spindle thingy, but that didn't really do anything.

your sure its your pedals and not your BB or something else?

Check the bb. Make sure it is in nice and tight.

I'm hoping that those drops you were doing did not hurt something. I would check your BB, and look at all the welds very closely in the rear end as well.
I agree with what someone said above. Check your pedals first. Make sure they are nice and tight. If they are loose, they will wiggle a little bit. Do that first before you start messing around with the bottom bracket. Another thing you should do is clean your bike after every ride or so. Not a huge cleaning, but just run a cloth or towel to get out dirt and grime or else it gets into everywhere. This helps prolong the life of your bike parts and also makes things nice and quiet.

How about your seatpost, is it lubed correctly, that was a problem I had when I thought that it was my pedals. But it wasn't, check the post.

Along that line of thought, you might also want to check the seat rails. That is a very common place for creaks to occur.

Tried greasing the peddle spindlle then re adjusting?
Stand up when you pedal hard to see it you still get the squeak. I found that my seat was the culprit instead of my pedals/bottom bracket.... It may be easier to wait until it starts squeaking again, and then immediately stand-up or at least get your weight off the seat to see if it stops...
rambler i have the same problem, but i think mine problem is most probably the BB, though i'm not quite sure how to fix? any ideas? like do you dis assemble the whole thing?

Usually it's just worked it's way a little loose. You will need a special wrench to tighten it though. If you bike's several yrs. old or has see alot of miles, why not just replace the BB with a new one? Seems like alot of concern here over $25 or so .....

Brand new bike, three days old for mine.
I don't follow what a BB is?
It's not the seat post, as I've been off the seat and still had it squeek.
I'm afraid it may have been the drops, as it started after I did my last one. I only did three of them, which I wouldn't think would be anything major. I've been babying the bike since. :/

I'm going to see what I can do this weekend when I go up to my cottage. I'm thinking I'll try and get the pedals off and try to tighten anything I see.

BB = Bottom Bracket (the gadget your crankarms connect to, that is either splined or tapered squares)
You mentioned that you had jumped your bike. About how high were these jumps. You may have cracked the frame.... :(

how about checking the crank arms themselves at the bb.if there has been no regular maintenence and big jumps, mud or any number of things can cause the noise to originate from there due to them coming loose.if they ARE loose and they are not corrected, they will make a small noise a large and possibly expensive(depending on the equipment) problem.loose=wobble, wobble=wear, wear=slack, slack=replace bb and crankarm(s) due to spindle being unsafe and many arms are made of materials that if there is slack will wear out quick and possibly become dangerous.dont stop at the pedals

Brand new bike basically, I doubt it's the frame or anything like that. I've done about the same to ****ty bikes a few times, which is all I did on this thing. I certainly hope the frame is better than that anyway.. I even jumped it onto grass sort of.
I thought BB meant bottom bracket, but I wasn't sure. I'll check it out today, thanks for all the suggestions and possibilities.

I fixed the problem. If anyone has this, or gets it or something, I'll just briefly mention what was happening.
Basically, the bolt that holds the pedal to the main spindle thing got stripped a small amount and since I was trying to tighten it, it wasn't biting anything substantial, and thus the pedal would slowly work it's way off and creak.
To fix this problem, I took off the pedal shaft, threaded the bolt in the full way, then took it out. Put the pedal shaft back on, smacked it repeatedly with a rubber mallet, then threaded the bolt in again. It caught on to something and works fine now.
I guess the pedal wasn't on the full way to start off with and hadn't been hammered on as tight as it should have been, so when I did the drops, the bolt end started working its way out. Hammering it on and then redoing everything made it go further in and lock itself much much tighter.
I'll probably have to replace the main spindle, or BB? (I assume that's what it's called? or what you guys were referring to) in the future, as it's not the best right now. But, for now it's all good.
Thanks for the help.
