"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - When will cycling coverage catch up to NASCAR?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm talking full HD coverage, bubble callouts for riders with power, speed, heartrate like NASCAR does. Certain riders "mic'd up" like they do in the NBA and NFL. Live streaming of all races like the NCAA is doing with the tournament.

What's your over/under on 2015?

Cycling hasn't been popular in America since, what, the 20s? I'd say this is about as big as it's getting. As it is, the major sports are already losing interest to cable tv, and the myriad other sports that now exist.

The similarities between crit racing and NASCAR on a restrictor-plate track (i.e. the really big ones) are pretty pronounced. The only real difference is that in a crit, the sprint at the end is more interesting. All the rest is the same, just stay out of the wind, don't crash and conserve fuel.

nope, never. but I have raced lots of crits, there is way more to them than staying out the wind and conserving fuel, way more.

Why would you not want to see power? That would be cool to see the power output of someone trying to bridge up to a break. Or maybe to see the power ramp up in the peloton in the lead up to a sprint.

What would also be cool would be delayed broadcasts with the race radio audio compiled together to give you an idea of things that were discussed and different strategies. I'm guessing the teams might not want that stuff broadcast even after the race is over though.

I agree. Show up for the last 5 minutes, and you'll pretty much get the gist of the race.

In terms of crit tactics, I'd love to learn more. At my low level (Cat 4), I haven't seen team tactics play a huge part of anything. I've probably been in about 40 bike races, but many more car races. At the higher levels there are all sorts of strategies and sub-plots in both disciplines, but at the lower levels it's mostly about finishing.

...one of the reasons why this is difficult is because NASCAR, and a lot of other sports too, have arenas full of paying customers who then go on to pay nine bucks for a Bud Light, twelve bucks for a ratty hot dog, et cetera. They are also a captive audience to advertisers.

And SRM has live telemetry streaming.

Oie, given that I live 30 minutes from Bristol Raceway, and seeing how CRAZY this area goes for NASCAR, and how crazy they get when a few cyclist slow down their drive - I doubt 2015 would even be close.

Maybe if we were forced to become a bike-centric society then it may happen, until then.... not a chance.

Btw... it's "race weekend" here this weekend - excellent time to get out and ride as everyone is up in Bristol. :D

IMO...Cycling like Soccer is a Euro sport. Most Americans do not understand the sport, rules and tactics of and its required physical abilities. Same thing with cycling. I enjoy cycling because I respect the discipline and physical effort of the participants. If I would never have jumped on a bike and suffered on it I doubt I would have any interest in the sport. Lance or no Lance. Americans just don't "get it".

Nascar is for the masses. Loud, confined, simple with anticipated calamity. Plus they have lots more sponsorship money and better PR people.

You epitomize how cycling positions itself. It's for egotistical, self-righteous elites who think they are 'above the masses'. Get over yourself.

It's the same game, with slightly different twists, as is any other sort of racing, be it horses, airplanes or wiener dogs.

NASCAR is for beer guzzling, frites eating, blue collar stiffs. or wait, is that bicycle racing? I get confused with these sports talk radio discussions on fri afternoons.

I think I kind of resemble a weiner dog though, short legs, fat middle, big nose, and chicks dig me.

Exactly. Go into a bar in America on Sunday and you get NASCAR. Go into a bar in Europe any day a race is on, and you get bikes or Formula 1. They're a similar demographic, they just talk different.

What a complete waste of oxygen. I hope you enjoy that life you've got going on. The wanna-be Euro-trash fits you to perfection.

The sad part about you is that you actually do have something to add to the conversation, but you're such a tool that no one cares.

Look, I don't apologize for my opinion of Botto. I'm certainly not the only one that sees him in this light. He begs for it. You can bet your ass I'm not going to cry in a corner because he wrote something against me. I find it curious that I'm a nimwit for responding, but he's somehow superior for attacking? Wrong. He's just another internet tough guy hiding behind a keyboard 1/2 a world away.

I must say I love your posts where you make some sort of reference. I usually have no clue at all what you are "typing" about and it leads to a nice couple of hours looking up who and what you mention (I am hoping I do not know these things because I am young but I doubt that). I now know who Bernard Madoff is and what a Ponzi scheme is. Plus I usually have to look up a lot of the words you use since I have a horrible vocabulary. You are single handedly making me smarter. Thanks! :thumb:
