Northeast - Bloomberg wants to ban bikes on subways!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Mayor Bloomberg opposes letting bikes on subways. It's a good thing he has no say over MTA rules. For a Mayor who has generally been very pro-biking this is a ridiculously stupid thing for him to say.

bloomturds is just silly. i hardly see any full size bicycle during rush hour when riding the subway, and even if i see a full size bicycle, it is during non-peak hours. he builds (i'm not sure if he is even responsible for this) bike lanes and encourage going green for everyone. not allow ppl to bring their bike into subway would only discourage ppl from biking.

instead of whining and trying to ban bike on subway, why dont they try to think of solutions? like no full size bike during rush hour (folders allow), a dedicated subway car just for bike, like the front or end of the car. thank god he ain't running the mta. if they do pass the law and ban bike on subway...i know i'm not voting this turd for a 3rd term for mayor.

good points VNYC, I also say give us one or two cars to use (middle or at each end usually works around the world). And there really aren't that many bikes on there.

my beef w/MB is if he wants the new Yankee stadium so freaking bad, why doesn't he pay for it himself?

question is, who the hell to replace him? :(Mark Green, maybe?

Bloomberg is the most pro-bike mayor I can recall. The guy is selecting pro-cycling people in key transportation departments, adding lots of facilities, tried to reduce auto traffic via congestion charging, and so forth.

If he doesn't want bikes on the subways, and can't do anything about it.... Who cares?

Well said. I rarely saw people with bikes on the subway, and if he wants to minimize the inconvenience to commuters than at least offer a solution. If someone is hurt or too tired to continue a ride they should have the option of relying on mass transit to get home, this seems like a poorly thought out comment to make.

he also singled out messengers, which is interesting...I think many peds single them out as troublemakers (riders who run lights, etc) but most messengers I see seem to know what they are doing (ie, they may run a light but do it smoothly without causing a huge rift in motor vehicle or pedestrian flow.). I wonder if hizzoner's comment was addressing those complaints as much as subway riders' gripes?

In any case, messengers do provide a necessary service in the city and you can't tell them they can't ride mass transit to work just like anyone else.

I actually rode the subway for a change the other day and happened to see a cyclist with his bike. He discretely moved it to the end of the platform and boarded the last car - just as the NYC Cycling map suggests. Maybe if Bloomberg thinks bikes are a problem he should buy the MTA some signs suggesting all cyclists use the end cars. Who knows? We might even take the suggestion.

as mentioned before, how often does this happen.
I mean really? me, I think I saw it once maybe twice a year at most.
why is he complaining about this? I think it's because he knows he's
going to have a tough time getting a third term and he's being as aholey as poss.
ie. going against the tax for the wealthy initiative.

Ban strollers!

Amen to that! Strollers pose more of a risk than the rare bike! I've seen thousands of mothers doing really dangerous things with strollers. 99.9999% of the time they don't even take their kids out of the strollers and try to go up and down stairs with kids in strollers, block the aisle, block the doors, make the platform dangerous, are super dangerous on the stairs, you name it.

Ban any stroller that's not neatly folded and not creating a hazard to everyone on the platform, trying to get on and off the train, riding the subway or trying to get up and down the stairs!

During this winter I've braved a crap load of bad weather, all while commuting daily on my trusty folder. I've only ONCE dipped into the subway with my folder for a part of my ride because conditions during that nasty winter day had degraded to the point of being beyond dangerous. I folded my bike up and didn't inconvenience a soul. So what's Bloomberg's gripe?!? :notamused:

Firstly I won't vote for MB because of his fighting for the repeal of the term limit law. Granted he has done a lot for cycling in NYC so this statement does come as a surprise at least to me.

I've been a long time member of Transportation Alternatives. I have to check their website and see if there is any reaction there to these statements
