These are files in Google Earth file format. They are very useful for communicating ride tracks, trails, etc.

Thanks,

gmaps pedometer or Google maps will allow you to save a persistent link to a particular map, and you can export that as a .kml file without ever taking the server resources. Just save the map to "your maps" on Gmaps , and you also get a ready index of your rides, etc, with persistent links.

gmap pedometer is very interesting. Thanks Tom.

Regarding the 'taking the server resources' and 'you also get a ready index of your rides' arguments. Image files are larger than GPS tracks and Flickr provides an index of our pictures but you allow us to upload them anyway (thanks!). Is it because you recognize that not requiring a third party service is more user friendly ;-).

And if you want to share it with BF folk, all you have to do is post that persistent link to your map, and they can also export that file for Google Earth from Gmaps pedometer or Google Maps.. :D
