Commuting - New york lock

I am thinking about purchasing a New York lock for my bike , has anyone used this lock before , and if so, how good is it, I heard they offer a guarentee against theft. Thanks CC:beer:

I use one, although one of the cheaper and lighter 4 1/2 star kryptonites would probably be almost as effective.

Pros: It's big and heavy, almost indestructable

Cons: It's big and heavy

Bottom line: I've got a half dozen bike locks laying around and everytime I'd have my doubts I'd purchase a different one. With the money I've spent on those I could have just bought one lock and forgot about it. Should last forever, don't lose the keys.

Carrying should be a consideration with the purchase of this lock. If it is frame mounted on a road bike it throws the balance of the bike off, mountain bike with a frame mount works good. Rack or bag carry works well. Buy your carry option when you buy the lock. One last thing, bring lots of money.

Since I commute in New York City, it's the only lock I bring. When I'm in New Jersey I always use the cable but never feel safe with it. If you live in a city, YOU HAVE TO HAVE IT.

I don't like the guarentee against theft policy since it's too stringent. I sent them all the information they wanted but they requested more. I sent them my receipt but they wanted the dealer to provide an appraisal since the bike was used. I tossed it out since the damand was stupid and had to be completed in 4 days.

Not only this but if the lock or chain is not located you get NOTHING!! Yup.. If the crook decides to take your broken lock and chain with him you get zero.

That said I could care less about the guarentee. It's the safty I'm after. Even Junk bikes people leave parked in the street all night long are only protected with the New York Chain. Enough said.

The New York lock is pretty darned good, but the written guarantee against theft is bad comedy.

When you get a duplicate key made, go to a *good* locksmith and not to one of those that work, say, at Sprawl-Mart. It cost me $10 to have a duplicate made. The locksmith spent quite a bit of time getting it just right, so I know he really earned his $10.

What key place do you goto? I only have one key left for my lock, and would love a duplicate... however the one key shop i went to would not copy my key! Right on the side it says "Kryptonite ACE - DO NOT DUPLICATE".... :confused:

BTW, i love my lock, i dont think i would trust my bike to any other lock :)

I just went to a local locksmith in Oak Park, Illinois. I've never had one of my Kryptonite lock keys say "DO NOT DUPLICATE" on it. (I own the New York U-Lock and some other lesser Kryptonite U-locks; I don't know if the New York chain lock is different about its keys.)

I felt more comfortable having a working duplicate made on my own time frame rather than have to wait for and pay for Kryptonite's key recovery service.

Always bring the lock (and key) with you to the locksmith. That way it can be tested on the spot. (It's saved me more than one return trip. ;)
