Bicycle Mechanics - Rear brake issue...

Hello....

I have an issue with my rear break caliper, basically summed up in that it does not return to a fully open position after realeasing the brake lever. I talked to my LBS about it and they recommended to check cable for rust, particularly around the housing. I did, found some rust and sanded it off. Brake is a little better in that it does not stay rubbing the rim; however, still not coming back to it's starting position. Should I remove the caliper to clean and lube?

Also, I don't think the cable goes back on with too much tension....rather, just not loose?

If you disconnect the cable and try the caliper and cable separately you'll find your answer. You probably need a new cable and housing.

If you take out the rear wheel and squeeze the brake caliper by hand, you should be able to see if the brake calipers are stiff. If it is, first oil all of the pivots to see if that loosens up, if not, then you have to adjust to the tension on the brake arms.

Drop a bit of light lubricant into your brake housing from the top and let it run down inside. If you have V brakes make sure you oil the noodle.

Does it not fully open or does it shift to one side (brake).

New cable/housing. I'd do both front and back at the same time - and make it a yearly tradition. Oil the cables and drip some into the housing as well. Grease can harden and gum-up the works.

Be sure to get brake-specific cables and housing. Gear cables will break if used for this.

It does not fully reopen, at first I thought it was shifting, but upon further inspection noticed they were not reopening.
