Long Distance Competition/Ultracycling, Randonneuring and Endurance Cycling - New Long-distance cycling initiative

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Looks like Jan Heine and some other members of the Seattle Randonneurs are supporting a new kind of long-distance event riding - see link here --

As I understand the event, you pick your own route, just make sure you hit the points mentioned, and make it in under 24 hours.

The first ride is from Seattle to Mt. St. Helens, to Mt. Rainier and back to Seattle. A group of 5 riders can work together to complete the ride; but all must finish in order to qualify as a completion.

For those of you not familiar with this area, I believe that by "Windy Ridge," they are referring to the overlook of the Mt. St. Helens on Windy Ridge, on forest service road 99, on the *east* side of the Mt. St. Helens. (It's closed to car traffic; it's not the more popular viewing site that tourists visit in the main part of the Mt. St. Helens park). By "Sunrise" I am guessing they are referring to a ride up to the Sunrise Visitor Center in Mt. Rainier National Park.

Depending on the route, 500km, 3 major mountain passes...(the climb up to Windy Ridge, the climb into Mt. Rainier, and the climb up to Sunrise).

There was a good article about the origins of this sport in the current issue of Bicycle Quarterly.

(cross posted in Pacific NW forum as well).

Thanks for the links. I had never heard of the "Charlie Miller" Society. Seattle appears to becoming a "real hot-bed" region for randoneurring and long distance riding.
