Road Cycling - How stupid does Saturn think roadies are?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Anyone else seen the Saturn commercial touting the advantages of their undentable doors? I just want to know where they got the idea that roadies take paths designed to hit parked cars at a right angle? :D

Well... they're trying to get folks who'll buy Saturns....

engineers? I don't think so..

Yeah, they are bozos, all right. Whenever I try to run into a Saturn, I always do so at an oblique angle!

the first time i saw it, i was a little shocked, especially given that they sponsor a cycling team...and i always go "OOOO!" when the guy hits the car at the end. i think his fork breaks or something...at any rate, it's staged, but i still kind of dislike it...they could've put something else in there for the final hit.

on an artistic level though, i think the commercial is great. i'm an (unemployed) audio engineer myself the idea for the audio is really original and probably took a lot of time to work out. so i can appreciate that.

Team Saturn disbanded as of 2003 The commercial sucks they should edit it like they did that flea bite in the PetMeds commercial

License to do what? Park their cars and hope a cyclist hits it? I personally think the lot of you are too keen on playing victim in this case.

Personally I think it would've been cool to hire someone to hop their trials bike onto the hood and ride over the car.

Nice image, and it would make their point -- but probably for a different
commercial. It wouldn't work with the things banging into the car sounds
of the one.

I think it's a decent commercial, but I do always wince when the cycle
hits. At least they didn't show a driver dooring a cyclist. That would be
worse.

Good idea, have the guy open the door, nah, might give them ideas as if they need more. Better yet, after he flys over the hood,go back and pull the driver out of the car and beat the holly sh$t out of him.

some people here are taking the commercial to personally. Its not like they have the car seeking out the biker with a target on the hood. its a parked car. sometimes i find that cyclists will complain about every little thing. its like were the little boy who cried wolf. we complain about all the little things that mean nothing and then wonder why nobody listens when something actually needs to be looked at.
i personally think its a good commercial. i really like Slovid's idea though.

Yeah, I'm a R/C aircraft enthusiast (not really).
I also lost 3 friends on 9/11 in the south tower (really).
I live in NYC and witnessed 9/11 firsthand (really).
That scene with the aircraft hitting the car door was completely uncalled for. Let me get on my soap box now. Thank god I live in a world that's so PC.

It's just a commercial. Get over it. It's not like they had a car actively HIT the biker to send the message that "hey you can run over a biker and it won't even dent your hood."

yea, but at least on my dent-resistant saturn, the hood, roof and trunk are metal--non-dent resistant.

but I love it anyway. a car could not have more character. I mean, with 85 hp, it needs SOMETHING! :D. handles nicely though.

DOH... I wonder why? Maybe the material costs a lot more.
I know during a certain car show that will remain unnamed, I jumped onto the hood of a 2003 porsche 911 turbo for a picture when no one was looking and felt the hood buckle inwards. People put stuff on their hood, roof, and trunk a lot. It'll suck to have to pay $500 to repair a dent caused by popping a 6-pack on the hood.

Not with the Ding King! (http://www.asseenontv.com/prod-pages/ding_king.html?gid=). My 200lb friend is quite notorous for jumping on people's hoods, bumpers, roofs, etc. and I can't say he's ever dented anything. But under normal use (as in people not riding on the hood or roof) I think the ocasional 6 pack or cinder block could be stored on the roof.

Brace yourselves for the next barrage. The latest Saturn commercial, for thier sport-ute, shows it gobbling up a kayak and then a bike, ala pac-man (the intent being its got the capacity to carry all these things)...........

But then again, maybe GM is in cahoots with Clear Channels

A MTB'er would have seen the car, stopped, give the car the finger (never mind the lack of a driver), and went somewhere to drink beer and tell his buddies how he avoided death...again.

Actually, I was thinking that maybe the hood is metal becuase plastic might melt, or at least expand too much w/ heat. The roof should be plastic, as well as the trunk. heck, my dad's old sebring had a plastic trunk...

Typical MTB'r, giving the finger to a parked, driverless vehicle. And probably drinking light beer, or one of those Zima knockoffs.............

A fixed gear rider would have gracefully avoided the vehicle and keep on going.

It seems to me that almost any commercial or ad with a bicycle in it offends someone on this forum.

Maybe we should ban bicycles form television. Would that make everyone happy? Oh, wait, people on here are crying all the time that they don't put enough cycling on TV. [sacasm on]I can't imagine why the networks would stay away from such an easily offended group.[sarcasm off]

Here is my standard answer that I seem to type once a month:

IT IS A COMMERCIAL. IT IS NOT REAL!!!!!!! It is NOT real. It is not REAL. GET IT.

When various objects hit a car no humans are necessarily hurt. When a cyclist hits a car he is hurt especially after he flies over the hood. Was your last bicycle accident funny? Mine wasn't it hurt a lot and the injuries took time to heal.

im sorry that you got hurt and that it took a long time to heal but its just a commercial. of course cycling accidents arent always funny but besides grumpy cyclists i dont think anybody is out there thinking "hey im going to park my car in places where a cyclist may not see me just so they will go over my hood"
i hit a parked car when i was a kid. wasnt going fast but i ended sliding across the hood. didnt hurt all that much and personally once i realized i hadnt scratched the car or broken anything it was just about the funniest cycling moment i had. one of those brain fart moments where you have no idea how you didnt see the car.

This was actually an issue when they were developing the first prototype Saturns. Left parked in the summer sun, the plastic would expand and warp.

Its just a commercial.

I consider that naive.

"Commercials" for national brands often represent the some of the best minds and deepest pockets doing what they can to get in your head and in your pockets. The choices and decisions that go into advertising involve a lot of money, and are by no means haphazard or arbitrary, even if they appear that way. Frankly, I think the Saturn humor may strike a chord at some level with a lot of drivers. That being the case, I'd rather they'd used some different amusing pratfall to make their point.

That is a HORRIBLE commercial.
First of all the fact it is a parked car is worse! The implication is that cyclists hit cars, cars don't hit cyclists! Think about it from a NON-cyclists' point of view!

Second, the fact it is "entertaining" to see a cyclist crash into a car and that it is somehow harmless fun lumped with bumping a surfboard or kid banging a door.

Third, the fact it is the only thing that shows a life-threatening event immediately followed by the tagline "PEOPLE FIRST". Yup, cyclists aren't people. Saturn drivers are people and cyclists that hit my car are stupid and it's their fault.

Fourth, Saturn should know better because they did sponsor one of the preimer american cycling teams for many years. I hold them to a higher standard than a company that has not any involvement with cycling. Despite that, it is a horrible commercial from any company.

Fifth, it goes to show you the image mainstream america has of cyclists.

You all GOT to be kidding! a) don't worry - its a bloody stuntman no doubt - I think its quite safe to say - HE WAS NOT HURT. b) You all GOT to be kidding me... c) I just saw it again last night - wasn't it a mountain bike? d) Anybody who reads anymore into this commercial than the fact that the car has dent-resistant side panels has spent too much time in academia, imho. e) I've known cyclists who hit inanimate objects, it happens, get over it... they're not insulting anyone. f) shut it.
