Local.

Frameset only, under $100 but over $40, repainted in a sloppy red, lots of scratches, fork chrome intact, anniversary headbadge not fitted, but included.

Deal or no deal?

Fair. Any vintage frameset of that quaility has a minimum amount of inherent value regardless of condition.

Obviously a fully painted original with nice decals and chrome would be highest with a frameset stripped of paint with bad chrome being lowest.

I'd put a stripped with bad chrome frameset in the $40 or lower price range. I recently sold this frameset for $125. I checked ebay completed listings and figured any SLX frameset had a minimum inherent value of $150-ish.

If it is your size and you want that model, why not? I would figure in $100 or so for a decent powder coat paint job. And $30 for decals. Then as long as you have some good parts laying around, you will end up with a good bike at a reasonable price.

Myself, I always prefer to find a whole bike. Even if I do not need all the parts, I will put them to use on another bike.

Check carefully for internal rust.

Since when did you have a D'Arienzo-badged Basso in stock? I would have swooped in and gobbled that one up in a minute if it was my size. I'm still hell bent and determined to find an intact '84 Olympic-tribute frame to replace a wrecked one I purchased for parts once:

I don't like Raleigh's higher-end stuff as a rule - I think their brazing is the worst crap I've ever seen in my life. Repainting anything is a no-no around here (whether the frame has been repainted in the past or not), and decals are only a possibility - nothing saying that I can't have a beat, red Raleigh Pro.

I figure that I can build up an ugly kludge beater that will ride nicely, and I won't be too ticked off if and when it gets wrecked - I don't think I'd care much either way. The build would be a mix of a Modolo Corsa brakeset and a Shimano Crane RD with perhaps a Veloce crankset. Ugly as sin, but functional.

I bought the complete bike a few months ago for $100 and posted about it in the main section. (with a Chris King headset and Mavic open 4cd's laced to sprint hubs)

It was a 52 cm.
