I almost put this under strange rides. I just returned from an afternoon ride, got caught in a shower, riding along when a bird (starling) flew out of a tree and slamed into my face. I breathe through my mouth and when I shut it, I realized I had hold of his wing with my teeth. I quickly spit him out, rinsed my mouth with what was left of my water, and rinsded again when I got home. PHOOEY! Gosh them things taste awful!!!! I did pickup a feather for a reminder.

That's possibly the strangest thing ever! Except maybe when some AAA pitcher hit a bird with a fastball during a game a few years ago (good ol' You Gotta See This, I miss that show).
You're never going to lose weight if you keep eating while you're riding!

That was actually Randy Johnson in a major league game. I'm curious too, did the starling survive?

As best I know, starlings have never been well known for tasting good. Particularly when on the wing.

DId the bird survive?
Yep, bird flew off after hitting the road. Guess I was lucky I didn't get any bird droppings between my teeth. Course it  Might have added to the taste.
At least you weren't .....ummmmm.......eating crow.
I hit an antlered buck once. But I didn't spit him out. Front end didn't survive either.

Oh well... You know what they say about a bird in the mouth. Or is that hand?... One of those...

- all kinds of beasties on our rides every day:
armadillo scurrying across the road last fall...
possum crossing last week...
black racers nearly every day after noon...
coiled diamondbacks resting in the sun in middle of path...
corn snakes coiled in the sun...
squirrels all the time (sometimes they run alongside for 20 feet or so, or hold conventions in mid-path)
lizards (faster, and seem smarter than the squirrels)
almost taken out by a flying peacock last week
raccoons junking up the rest stop (rooting for leftover raisin boxes)
alligators cruising impoundment edges (only when i happen to stop for a quick cast or two!)
almost ran over a coral snake... or was it a king? perhaps i should remember:
'If red touches yellow, it can kill a fellow' (coral snake)
'If red touches black, it is a friend of Jack' (scarlet kingsnake or scarlet snake)

If you're trying to lose weight, you're supposed to eat like a bird.
Actually, a guy in my neighborhood was jogging, and a bat flew into his mouth. He had to get rabies shots. He also decided to name his next two children Jack and Kelly.

…but if it survived, imagine the tale it had to tell its friends and family!

Reminds me of the time a seagull at the san francisco zoo took an onion ring out of my closed mouth after I began chewing. Its a crying shame they can't be hunted.
That still beats a squirrel in the spokes.

No it doesn't, squirrels can be eaten. Birds that manage to fly away can't.:D

Aren't squirrels members of the rat family?

Both are tasty varients of the rodent family.

As are rabbits, hares, beavers, muskrats, mice and, my personal favorite, the capybara which at 110 lbs is the largest of the rodents. Hot damn! You could feed a whole passel of people on that one ;)

During a night ride a few years back a BAT flying across the road smacked into my face, nearly unseating me. It really hurt!
I also hit a bee the other day and got stung on the lip for my trouble. Got back from lunch with a deformed face and watery eyes. I'm also hitting a LOT of butterflies monarchs) and japanese beetles these days.
You definitely win though.
I had an interesting moment on my commute this week from home to school. A nice Floridian bird of prey (maybe a red shoulder hawk) decided to fly by me for about 100 yards, same speed, same path, about 5 or 6 yards from me. I am not sure if it was a "territorial" thing, but after a while it went up and stayed on the high voltage cables just looking down. It was pretty cool, and I am glad I did not have any mouth contact with it (it was a freaking large chicken actually).

Did you know bats are the #1 way that humans get rabies? It's not because they're particularly bad or anything, rather the opposite in fact. They're so small that people often don't notice, or don't think anything of it, if they get bitten while evicting it from a house, or running into it on a bike, or whatever.
This inability to recognize a potential infection, in contrast to a bite from a dog or raccoon, leads to a lack of proper prophylactic treatment, and is the cause of the high mortality rate for bat bites.

I had a fox stop next to the trail today, watched me ride by. In the last two weeks I have seen snakes (Black Racers), 4 deer, racoon, squirrels, rabbits and our local endangered species, the Gopher Tortoise. A month or so back, I had a hawk swoop down out of a tree so low that I ducked as he went over my head. Maybe he was thinking about carrying me off for dinner, then realised I am a little heavier than most roadies. :)Riding in Florida can be interesting at times, especially up here in a relatively rural area.
hehe good one. Definately beats a pit bulldog in the spokes :)
You're a mouth breather? Have you seen an ear - nose - throat doctor? Mouth breathing means something is structurally wrong, you may want it fixed.
My daughter was a mouth breather, snored, had sleep apnea (concerns about nighttime oxygen deprivation), and was constantly getting upper respiriatory infections. After she had tonsil surgery, all problems went away, including constantly being sick and being on antibiotics many times a year.
And her voice changed, into a very sweet voice with a lovely tone.

Do you prefer white or dark meat? I prefer white so I too would have spit out the wing but at least I would have gone for the breast.

For anyone who has never seen the "Randy Johnson hit's bird" clip:

Unbelievable, but .... It happenned again this year in baseball, but not the direct hit like RJ's pitch. Yup, that bird definitely did not make it, in case you can't see that in the video.
