Fifty Plus (50+) - What an idiot!!!

One of my lifelong lessons my Dad gave me was to "never force anything"-generally related to tools but can really be applied in many different ways.

I flunked the lesson yesterday. Tried to push or "force" my sunglasses into my jersey pocket and below are the results. The folks at Rudy Project have worked well with me before so we'll see how gracious they are with an idiot this time. Heck, looks like a manufacturing defect to me!!!

In my defense I was just starting a rather long 6 mile climb and messing with my glasses while struggling to get going up a 10% grade. It turned into a long day-8300 ft of climbing over 97 miles. Boy was I fast.........14 mph avg.

I knew it was going to be that kind of day when less than 1/2 mile from the start there was an unplanned detour that wound up being a total of 10 miles round trip. Plus the weather was NOT sunny as promised and the temps were a LOT colder than promised. But no complaints-always great to be out riding.

One other commentary.......this was the first descending I had done this year to speak of. I had to reteach myself how to descend!! Nothing like bombing it down a 6 mile descent wondering if you're going to make it through the hairpins.

I wouldn't worry about it. If it broke it needed replacing anyway.

I normally sit on mine- or the wife does.

On holiday a couple of years ago And I was annoyed. I broke one pair of my Rudy Project II's just before the holiday and they are no longer made. so $200 later and I had the best posiible lens in the most comfortable frame I had ever worn. That was the pair the wife sat on on holiday.

Back to the LBS and I bought the same frame but with the cheapest lens for $150. Have the good lens' fitted but now have two different frames that don't have interchangable lens'

NO doubt it, Joe, anyone can see from your photo that it was a manufacturing defect.....

When I was a young lad during my apprenticeship a wise old Tool and Die maker told me. "if it don't fit, don't force it" sounds like your dad went to the same school as my old friend did. That advice has served me well and when at the times I didn't take that advice I always broke something or screwed up and cause myself more work.

Which is why I bought the < $20 fitover type at wally world five years ago. Because I knew I would lose them some how before the years was out. They have had ample opportunity to; fly off my head while riding, fall overboard into 100 feet of water while I was fishing, slide across dash and out the window of the car, gotten stepped on, sat on, or dog chewed. As happened to every other pair of $100+ sunglasses I have ever owned. But have they? NOPE, not a single scratch.
So it's not that your an idiot (please check with the wife first), but it's the curse of the "good" sunglass gremlin. Get a cheap pair and see how long they last.

I totally agree with leob1 even though I haven't had anywhere near the good luck with my "fit-over" sunglasses. I've broken, lost or abused several . . . still:

1. They're relatively cheap
2. Easy to put on or take off while riding
3. Light weight
4. It's not tragic if they "go away" for whatever reason(s).

Plus, I have to wear glasses anyway. so they "fit-over" my normal glasses fine.

I had a pair of Oakley's snap like that when I was removing them from my face...just held them between the lenses near the bridge to pull them off, and the next thing I knew there were two pieces in my lap. And no, I'm not that strong by a long shot.

Oakley replaced them no questions asked, so good on them.

I recently lost my nearly 20 year old Ti sunglasses. Yes nearly 20 years with the same frame, several sets of lenses over the years. Frame was expensive when purchased but probably worked out to 5 -10 cents per day.

On the other hand I lost a great pair of regular glasses last summer, replaced them with junk and had to replace the junk.

Lets see what the next 20 years brings.

Rudy Project's customer service is pretty darn good. I'll get a full frame replacement for what I consider a pretty minor amount. Maybe I was just too hard on myself???????

:rolleyes: what is the difference between a walmart pair of sunglasses and an expesive pair. It is mostly brand name. Like Rolex and Timex. They both tell time when the cheap one breaks in two the three years or some one steals (borrows it from you) it don't hurt so much. That is why I am the frugal German!!!!:beer:

I have tried many a cheap pair and while most were okay, they just didn't have the features I liked. A typical ride I do is around 5-7 hours. I've found that if I have a pair of sunglasses that is off just a bit-unlevel and unadjustable, a tad heavy or slides down the nose, etc-after a while I'm tempted to jerk them off and chuck them off into a ditch. My current pair can be adjusted like crazy from the temples to the nose piece-they are so light you don't know that they are there------plus my beautiful long eyelasses don't hit the lenses every time I blink. I can even replace these lenses should they become scratched-which I've done. Cost a little more upfront but I don't know that I've spent that much more over time plus the comfort is the best I can hope for.

Oh yeah-I'm generally pretty cheap too but I try and put some thought into my buying decisions!

Sorry pops, but it sounds like you've never worn an expensive pair. I started riding with relatively inexpensive sunglasses. I found they totally fogged up whenever it was humid or hot out. I got a pair of Oakley's and it was night and day...no fogging issues and much clearer, sharper vision. More comfortable to boot.

So that is the difference...the expensive ones (at least some of the expensive ones) actually perform better.

You do learn as you progress in cycling that the better stuff works. Cycling specific glasses do work better at keeping dust and bugs out of the eyes- and they can be had quite cheaply. You can get them with interchangable lens's aswell so bright sun, murky conditions or even twilight and you will have a lens that works for the light conditions. But even in cycling specific glasses- price pays. It took me years before I summoned up enough courage to buy my first pair of $100 glasses but they worked superbly and the comfort stakes after hours in the saddle just had believed. Then a couple of years ago I walked into my LBS and tried a pair on- checked the bank balance- and bought them.

So that is enough about Glasses- lets start on the Assos $300 long sleeve winter jackets:innocent:

Cheap works fine for me. My husband(construction engineer) brings me tinted and non-tinted safety glasses. They don't look geeky anymore, fit comfortably and deflect bugs well. Of course, the rest of me looks pretty geeky.
