Tandem Cycling - Packing an S&S equipped Calfee

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I was quite suprised when I went to pack our new S&S equiped Calfee into 2 hard cases and realised the captains section was not going to fit in an S&S hardcase. Fotunatley a friend had insisted on loaning me his soft side cases which the captins section fit into.
Has anybody packed the newer style Calfee (no lateral) in 2 S&S hardcases. How about the S&S hybrid case? I did have some palstic inserts made to reinforcefor the sides of the soft case.
Both wheels and the stoker traiangle will fit in 1 hardcase. I was going to see if I could find a hardcase with dimesins of 27x25 or 28x24, which the front triangle would easily fit into. These cases could be thinner than 10". Anybody have any ideas on where to find such a case.
Thanks,
ChiChi
Did you take the front fork off? Once the fork was off it fit fine. We have about a medium up front. I think the fork will have less potential for damage packed separately.
But, I can see that larger frames may have a problem. They split the larger frames in front of the captains seatube.
Yes I took the fork out. My top tube c/c is 22". The length from end of coupling to front of head tube at the the top tube is 26.75". Maybe there is a way to angle the captian section in place.

I think you said your frame was a medium/small - correct? If so, it is the same as mine. I'll see if I took any pics of the packing
Frame is custom most likley comprable to medium medium may have a long top tube as thats how my other bikes have been built.

I purchased my Parker case from Atlas back in 2002 (photo below); pretty straight forward but also not exactly cheap. While I haven't packed our Calfee I did check the dimensions and with a 21" top tube the overall length of our frame is on the order of 25" going from coupler to head tube. So, yes.... if you've got an extra inch in there I would imagine it could be a snug fit and, well, snug wouldn't be optimum. I'd have to play around with it before I might have an ephiphany regarding how best to make it fit but, if it was me and had made it clear that it would be packed in the S&S hard cases when I ordered the frame, I'd probably be asking the folks at Calfee how they envisioned packing it.

Chichi, be aware that you will likely get hit in the pocketbook if the overall size of the shipping container is >62" (LWH). Lufthansa could charge you up to $200 euros/case in each direction. Hopefully TG or Calfee will come up with a solution.
Our top tube is a little less than 22". It's 55 cm. Here is how it goes in the case. It's at a slight angle and it has some room still left to the sides of the case for padding.
