The top of the joint at the base of my thumb before the proximal phalanx has been chronically sore. Its right in that groove which grips the hoods of my brifters. I rotated my handlebars towards me a bit so that the weight of my hand isn't jammed against the hoods but resting on my palm on the bars.

I'm training for 100+ mile rides and i need a solution other than changing hand positions frequently. Is there anything I can insert under the brake hoods?

I'm currently riding a nice steel bike. Would buying carbon handle bars help?

thanks!

Under the hoods, probably not.

A couple of options:
• Add aero bars, and use them as often as possible (i.e. when you arent' drafting).
• Add cross/interruptor brakes, so that you can spend more time on the tops.
• Stop using drop bars. Maybe you can try bullhorns with bar-end shifters, or a time trial setup.
• Spend less time in the hoods.

I don't think carbon bits will help much -- unless you go whole hog and switch to a full CF frame. Perhaps switching to wider and/or lower PSI tires will cut down on vibrations.
