About 1,000 bicyclists jammed the streets of Hollywood overnight, causing disruptions to traffic, police said.

The bicyclists rode through red lights and "stampeded like a herd of wild buffalo," said the watch commander at the Los Angeles Police Department's Hollywood Station.

No arrests were made. Though no injuries were reported, he said the late-night riders were dangerous and someone would eventually get hurt.

Similar problems were reported earlier around Third Street and La Brea Avenue.

The riders were believed to be part of a Critical Mass ride, which, according to Critical-Mass.info, is a "monthly bicycle ride to celebrate cycling and to assert cyclists' right to the road."

According to the site, Critical Mass has no leaders and no central organization, it is not an organization, but rather, an idea and an event.

Stampede

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A stampede is an act of mass impulse among herd animals (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herd_animal) or a crowd of people in which the herd (or crowd) collectively begins running with no clear direction or purpose. Stampedes are believed to originate from biological responses in the brains (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brain) and endocrine systems (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endocrine_system) of herd animals. The response is believed to have evolved to help animals escape predators.
A large stampede will frequently eliminate anything in its path. In farmed animals, herd managers, sometimes called cowboys (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cowboy), attempt to turn the moving herd into itself, so that it runs in circles rather than self-destructing by running over a cliff or into a river, or from damaging human life or property by overrunning human settlements.
Specific animals associated with stampede behaviour are cattle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cattle), elephants (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elephant), Blue Wildebeests (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Wildebeest), wild horses (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wild_horse) and humans (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human).

Roadfix. I believe you. I just came back from the bakery and a man was buying 3 huge cakes, which said something about Congrats to Japan or something. So I said "do you work for Honda?", near here. No Japan Air Lines, sez he. He told me he was getting the cakes for the team on their way back to Japan today.
Otherwise I knew nothing of any Baseball Classic.
Anyway, doesn't Calgary have a Stampede every year?

Indeed - in July. But it's a misnomer - it's a quality rodeo event. I'm usually the only Asian guy there.
