I was wondering, is there any software out there that can show you back roads to ride on?
I was in a local bike shop about a week ago and someone was talking about it but I was in a rush so couldn't ask.

Try DeLorme. They publish a detailed atlas of back roads of every states and I think have some mapping software. I've had better luck with maps rather then software.

You might also check with your state department of transportation. Here they publish a map for cyclists indicating the friendliness of the road for cycling as well as traffic density.
