After having problems with my rear hub for the past six months, I continued to have them Saturday, and pulled the cassette off to take a look. Well, I got more of a look than expected, when the entire freehub assembly came off in my right hand, with the hub body (and wheel) still in my left. Both sides had their respective axle end.

And thus, all my strange unable-to-replicate-at-home problems are explained. I believe that I cracked this axle at some point last year, probably with about 5k miles on it, and it just finally broke clean at some point. With a QR pulled tight, it is pretty hard to detect a broken axle, and it only misbehaved under load, which I could not replicate in the shop.

So this brings up 2 related issues:
1. Getting a new axle, and repairing the broken one, and
2. Getting a new wheel entirely, to have a spare.

Am I right in thinking DT Hugi hubs are supposed to be good? We are a light team (270 tops), and I do not abuse the bike, though we have hit the random pothole, have never had a pinch flat or broken wheel out of it. 5k miles is nothing on most of my other stuff, and I expected a tandem hub to be near bullet-proof.

Any recommendations for everyday wheels? Tandems East has various rim/hub combos, but I don't have much experience with them. I am definitely interested in lighter stuff, but if a heavy part is breaking at 5k miles, then maybe I need to check that.

This wheel was original equipment on a 2006 CoMotion Primera.

Are these axles something that can be had readily? I normally do all my own work, build my own wheels etc, but I have not for the tandem yet.

If you bought it new....

Before doing anything and even though it's probably out of the OEM warranty, I would contact your dealer and, in turn, Co-Motion. See what they might recommend or offer.

DT Hugi are a bit finicky when it comes to keeping the star ratchet mech. clean and lubricated but a broken axle is a bit unusual. If there was a bad batch of hubs or just a few similar instances of axle failures Co-Motion would most certainly be aware and may have already worked out a good-will arrangement with DT Swiss.

FWIW, when I needed to buy an axle for a DT hub to convert our spare off road wheels from 145 to 140, DT allowed me to buy direct. The cost was reasonable.

If you check the website for DT, they have decent illustrated parts diagrams with part numbers.

Seeing as we too have 06 Co-Motion / DT hubs, and are heavier than you folks, I'll keep this on the list of things to occasionally check.

We broke our rear axle last year. The clean break was preceded by some chain slap problems on the stay a few weeks earlier. I phoned CoMotion and they referred me to the following address:

DT Swiss Inc.
2493 Industrial Blvd.
USA - Grand Junction/CO 81505
Phone +1 (970) 242 9232
Fax +1 (970) 244 8918
e-mail: tech@dtswiss-us.com

The axle was $15.00 and easy to replace, but the cost of shipping it to Canada was about $40.00.
