I am looking at getting an Ultegra group (w/o hubs) to upgrate my Surly CycloCross. I was just wondering if an Ultegra cassette will fit on my Deore Freehub. Sheldon Brown says "Shimano 8- and 9- and 10-speed cassettes/hubs are fully interchangeable for wheels with steel Freehub bodies." but I just want to make sure before I invest money into something that won't work. Thanx.

It should, as all Shimano freehubs are splined the same.

I am running an Ultegra 9 speed on an LX hub. Shimano is great for interchangeability.

CHEERS.

Yes it'll work as will any of the SRAM offerings like the PG-970 Cassette (Formerly R9). I'm currently running a similar setup on my commuter bike.
